Here's another band you might like (if you haven't heard them already) they Sound closer to Santana than Funkadelic on much of the album but there are some Funkadelic type moments also.

I haven't listened to it much lately they maybe got a bit more commercial but they used to play some heavy underground funk that can still be found in their archives

Check out Victor Wooten. He slaps like a beast, "victor's jam" on YouTube is a good example. Also check out Stone Jam by Slave, Mark Addams was a great slapper too.
