James Brown
I really can't beileve their is no thread for him yet.
http://image.examiner.com/images/blo..._brown1228.jpg James Brown was a popular African-American early R&B singer. He has some really big hits such as I Got You (I Feel Good). According to Allmusic he was highly responsible for turning R&B into soul and soul into funk. Here are some good songs. Their pretty hard to find on youtube, I usually use grooveshark but here are some of his songs. Try Me I Got You (I Feel Good) Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Pt. 1 |
There's probably no thread because everyone would already agree with you. James Brown is a frickin' musical genius.
|
my thoughts exactly lol
James Brown could be considered Godfather of soul AND funk Aretha's got a similar influential status |

he was probably the most entertaining mofo that ever lived.
I loved watching his concerts where he'd play "I feel good" at double-speed for like thirty seconds, then go right into "please,please,please"....and there's also that drunken interview on youtube. |
Full hearted agreement!!
James Brown is just too good. Too awesome for a simple thread. He deserves a parade, with lots of glitter. Clearly, he's that good. ;) |
Just because this is so awesome... I'll post it in this thread too.
|
^that vid had to be posted
great how he goes all serious for a second when she asks him about the gospel magazine, then he goes back to shouting random ****. |

Really the standard by which all front men should be judged.
Energy and enthusiasm and real charisma. A fuckin genius to be sure, but more importantly impeccable timing. He helped launch the greatest era of music and did it in a way that was sure to get folks attention. |

Gotta love that James Brown sound.:)
I Feel Good Papa's Got a Brand New Bag Out of Sight Night Train And yes I even like Living in America.;) All classics. |
The album he did in 74 IN HELL is the **** but still it has not been rereleased. Old vinyl are going for a fortune.
Criminal |
From "Sex Machine" to around about 1975, he was near enough flawless in his output. Everyone needs to hear some of his live albums, Live at the Apollo is the obvious choice, but also amazing are Vols II & III of Live at the Apollo, and Live at L'Olympia is probably the best of all his live albums.
Also worth finding (it's readily available on the internet) is the bootleg live album Live in Zaire. This was recorded in 1974, so you get incredible live versions of The Payback, The Boss and Get On the Good Foot, none of which appear on any of the aforementioned albums. Finally, also great were the solo records by the JBs (his backing band) and the various members of his entourage that were recorded around this time. The James Brown's Funky People comps (there are three) are all utterly essential, and there's plenty more great stuff on the studio albums of the JBs. |
He's the man. Influenced everyone from Sly Stone, to Funkadelic, Rap, Prince and Michael Jackson.
|
Not many people can say they basically invented an entire genre of music. JB's one of the few who could.
|
just look at my user name, "play it maceo" yeh number one brother! "baby baby baby"
|
JB belongs with the greats like Stravinsky and Cage. He created a genre of music that wasn't there before. He's influenced more than just Prince and Michael Jackson. He's influenced all of pop music from the chicken scratch guitar and staccato horns to the stuttering, boogaloo drum beat so prevalent in any form of dance music be it rock, country or r&b.

My favorites are Cold Sweat and Papa Don't Take no Mess.
My band plays Cold Sweat all the time. I saw an interview with JB, and he critizcized Motown for turning down the bass to make the music more digestible to some people. The he goes on about how the bass is the heartbeat of the music, etc. Just awesome. |

****, trying to put up Soul Power
YouTube - maceo-parker soul power ( part 2) james-brown& jean-marc perpignan |
"King Herion" is a wonderful song, Herion is one drug you should never, ever experiment with.
It has killed legends, destroyed lives, made people cry, it is the devil's drug. |
My band covers Soul Power, Cold Sweat, Man's World (female singer), and I Got You
I don't really know of a James Brown song I don't like. Try Me is amazingly doo wop vs something like Papa Don't Take No Mess or The Payback |

Funk is really the least appreciated music genre out there. I blame Pfunk but whatever. Hell is an album everyone should own. My Thang and Papa might be two of the best songs in a storied career. |
^True and it's a shame as it's one of the best

James Brown - "Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul" (Def. Edit Created by Glen Bringslid) - YouTube Probably the best deep-cut I've heard in awhile. |
My first James Brown album was his 1974 Hell record and here's a great track from it.
|
With some artists I "cut to the chase" and don't stray from their classics:
