The Queen of Funk?
okay, so I was just wondering since Aretha Franklin is "generally" recognized as the queen of Soul, and Donna Summer as the queen of Disco (although that title is more controversial than Aretha's title) who do you think is "most" recognized as the potential queen of Funk? Which fine lady might have been the most influential or made the most impact for the funk scene?
I think Chaka Khan is up there near the top.. |

merry clayton, gimmie shelter, another blistering stones cover, you definetly would give her shelter, she's a gorgeous looking woman.

spanky wilson, with a resounding cover of sunshine of your love, her raspy voice and the raw heavy groove make it a winner!

O WOW Merry Clayton
That was pretty amazing! gotta give her the crown. |
Jody Watley-'Still A Thrill'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kg6Dt3pia9g

I wouldn't vote Jody Watley queen of anything musical. Haha. Don't know if there was ever one dominant and consistent "Queen" of funk. Teena Marie is definitely up there. Nona Hendryx of Labelle also comes to mind. Also Betty Davis who was Miles Davis' second wife. Betty is the one who turned Miles on to Jimi and Sly and all the great funk and r&b that would influence his later music like Bitches Brew. Her own music was very revolutionary in a soul/rock genre back in the 70s. Unfortunately she only released three albums amid alot of scandal and protest from religious groups for her open sexual attitude. She was Prince before Prince. Had her music been more popular, she would be the natural heir to the throne.

Yum, Betty Davis is awesome ...
