Red face Albums to start collections?

Hello all,
This seems like the ideal place to post this. The boyfriend wishes to have some sweet funk to add to his collection, which consists of.. nothing at this point. Since his birthday is coming up this weekend, I think it would be good to start him off right.

Anyone have any suggestions that are MUST HAVES for any funk collection?
I was thinking of 3-5 cds..

brilliant suggestions already - you can't go wrong with any of the above. not that you really need any more, but if you do:

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Cymande - Cymande
The JBs - Food For Thought

happy shopping!

Yea, that album is great. Especially 1990, with most of the song being a wonderful solo.
