Sly was awesome and whatever his motives were for his messages, they were a much needed product of the time. But worse than him f'ing over his fans, he f'ed over himself which put him in the looney bin and this interview is just a preview of how he got there.
Fave song: If You Want Me To Stay
Best album: Fresh

Cant beat Larry Graham, one of the most influential Funk bassists of all time, kind of wish I'd taken the opertunity to make some of these threads when this thing opened now. :/

Tesla has a good version of 'I want to take you higher'.

Are you serious? That Band of Gypsy's album is the dogs. I may have to hunt down these tapes.

Sly And The Family Stone are decent, really like the Stand! album-always puts a smile on my face, and the bass playing is amongst the best I've ever heard.

FUUUUCK Sly Stone. He never gave a crap about his fans or his musical legacy. It was just an avenue for him to stay high...and his positive messages were marketing gimmicks just to keep people supporting his habit.
Same here. I did not know about this back then. A friend mentioned this yesterday and we went and looked up the Youtube footage. While I am not surprised, it certainly changes my view of Sly and puts his other antics in a different perspective. The comments at Youtube by those that think that Sly was the positive element in the exchange are disturbing and doubly so because they are so predictable in the post-Powell-Memo United States.

Fuck Muhammad Ali! The bastard was voted the athlete of the century, when everybody knows that award should've went to Bruce Lee.

Besides, Sly would just kick the shit out of Ali. (now anyway)
