Fat Freddy's Drop
I put these guys in general music because they mix soo many genres into their music. Things like Roots and Dub Reggae, to Jazz and Soul. They're from New Zealand I think and they're amazing. "Based on a True Story" is a fanominal album. For anyone who is interested i'll upload it.
|
Great band.
Fantastical live. Up please ;) |
Alright, i should have it done tonight. ALSO!...you're really lucky for seeing them live. I'd imagine it would have been a great show. They're all soo talented.
|
Not only did I see them live....I saw them live 4 times....
Free. The only thing that annoys me is how overplayed (In New Zealand) "The Wandering Eye" is. |
yeah, i've never heard anything about them in Canada. Are they pretty big in NZ?
|
They're pretty localized really.
nothing huge. But that one song is/was/will always be huge. It doesn't help that it's 9 minutes long. |
Fat Freddy's Drop.
I can't hold it in any longer. Im just loving this NZ band that utilises reggae rythmns overdubbed with some great Soul/Funk. Their full length album Based On A True Story did'nt impress me initially, but once I succumbed to their style I was smitten! This is a track from BASED. I also have an excellent 4 track live EP that clocks in at over 60 mins and showcase their truly brilliant laidback vibes.

New album out at last
More music to get sweaty to. Here is the edit version of The Camel. |
<3 <3 <3
Wild Wind, Pull the Catch, and the Raft are my faves from the new album so far. I could only find a youtube vid for Pull the Catch though. |
My flatmate bought the new album but I haven't had the chance to give it a spin yet. Can't wait. :D
|
Some of the sexiest music I have ever heard.
|
I hadn't realized they'd released a second album. My only decent music non-mainstream source closed down early this year (Real Groovy).
On another note, that is an AWESOME song. I'll have to keep an eye out for the album. |
Bump, because I just got tickets to see Fat Freddy's Drop live on October 16th. I'm totally pumped! Anyone else had the pleasure to see them perform live? If so, the verdict?
|
^^^^ I'm quite jealous
|
I'm green with envy Lateralus. We better get an awesome concert review from you!
|
There will be indeed, I promise! Because I'm sure it will be awesome. I was originally planning to get tickets to see them in their hometown of Wellington while I'm here in New Zealand, but turns out they're hitting Australia first before returning home. Can't wait!
|
Bump! I can't believe I didn't post about seeing them! It was a while ago now (October) but it was pretty awesome, a very sexy gig. They are both an exhilarting and interesting band to see live, especially since I had my friends there and we shared a few very sweaty and sultry dances together. Was great fun and they are even more amazing live than what I had already heard of them. They have such a groovy sound going on.
I'm also going to see them AGAIN at the beginning of February! As you probably know I am moving to New Zealand and they are playing at a festival there which I just bought tickets to. I'm really looking forward to it but at the same time I'm a bit anxious as I'll be a bit lonesome, so hopefully I'll find some fun New Zealanders to get my groove on with :D Will also be great to see them in a festival setting, which I can totally imagine them in. Contrary to most people's opinions about seeing one of their favourite bands at festivals, I actually really love the festival setting for a gig. |
Downloading 'Based on a True Story' as I type. :tramp:

As good as the band are, they take on a different dimension live and Live At Matterhorn's is just 4 tracks spanning 80 mins of pure sexual tension. This is not from that E.P but it is an example of how good they are live:
This is from a radio session they did a couple of years ago. If you cannot find anything that doesn't move you in this song you are dead from the waist down! |

Another convert! My best friend who isn't into Reggae/Dub at all has now fallen for this band big time. OK I have bought him tickets to see them in September but he is not the sort of guy to like something for the sake of it.
They really are a sensational band. |

Here are some old (perhaps less well known) tunes by FFD:
Hope - it was featured on a compilation called Conscious Roots, that version is longer and IMO better. I believe that this track was also their first ever single. Midnight Marauders - another oldie, but damn is it a goodie. This Room - this number was featured on Gilles Petersen's BBC Sessions. It is interesting that on their debut album Based on a True Story, there are two tracks named Hope and This Room, but they bear almost no resemblance to these older recordings I've just posted... |
thanks, thats great
|
Fat Freddy's Drop is playing 1:45 hours from here at Sierra Nevada Music Festival.....and I can't go!!!
|
Saw them live last night and they kicked arse. I was dancing all night. Superb live band.

I've seen them live too, absolutely incredible. They go beyond any live act I've ever seen!
Their recent album Dr. Boondigga and The Big BW is highly recommended if you are into dub music! I'm going to review it. |

Still chuffed that I have got to see them and bought the obligatory T shirt! |
Gotta say, this band is a major grower for me. It took me a long time to fully appreciate Big BW but now I'm infatuated with it. The first one is still growing on me as well.
Seeing a band like Fat Freddy's Drop would be sublime I imagine. I need them to come to The States asap. |
yeah, they are the bomb. a dutch friend actually recommended them to me.....
anyone know some similar artists? |
Quote:
Sort of similar (but amazing) |
:)
Also throw in: Salmonella Dub Six60 Rhombus The Black Seeds Ozomatli The Cat Empire Trinity Roots Kukan Dub Lagan Transglobal Underground Some of these do sound a lot different to FFD but work on the same principle of fusing many genres together whilst still maintaining a groove as opposed to sounding like bands that lack cohesion. Salmonella Dub's Heal Me and Rhombus's Bass Player albums are definitely recommended as being similar to FFD. |
Found this on my travels on the WWW and it is an official vid. The filming is awful but it really does encapsulate them live.
I have seen many, many live bands in my time and FFD are up there in my top 10 easily. Crowd participation, musical improvisation and atmosphere are all here in a crappy camera operators viewfinder! :( and I'm at this venue next weekend again :) |
The first single from their new album "Blackbird" is now available for free download on their website, if anyone would like to check it out. I love it!
Fat Freddy's Drop |
i saw them live in london ON. only caught three songs, but it was a hella good three songs. then i moved out west (BC) where everyone knows everyone and musicians are not special, and everyone there seems to think that the guys in this band are a buncha dicks, including my ex girlfriend who has met them. no idea if that's true, but it seems to be a kind of consensus.
edit: that being said, james brown was kind of a dick, and his funk was bomb. so who cares. |
A bunch of dicks that make damn good music is OK by me and the sort of music that is original enough to warrant multiple listens is also OK by me.
I have seen well over 100 bands live and these were one of the best I have seen. |
They're good. Have a special feel. But something about their music irks me. Maybe because I have a problem listening to soul music. But they deserve props. Probably one of the better groups out there today.
