Duffy

Liking this single of hers at the moment.
When I first heard it and then saw she was white, I couldn't believe my eyes/ears.
Great voice...straight out of classic Motown...old school R&B.
Nice Northern Soul moves in the vid too.

jackhammer 02-01-2008 01:07 PM

I like that a lot.

right-track 02-01-2008 02:13 PM

She's got a debut album coming out soon, but I'd be hoping for too much if it was is the same vein.
'Mercy' reminds me of a cross between Stand By Me and Rehab.
I'll be keeping an eye on what she does next.

right-track 02-03-2008 03:18 AM

Breathless performance.
She brings a whole new dimension to this old (first) song.
Simply stunning.

Too good to be true.
Please give this a full viewing ...it builds and builds.

jackhammer 02-03-2008 11:15 AM

She has a great voice, but I have never been a fan of the first track.

right-track 02-03-2008 11:25 AM

Neither have I, till she sang it.
First time I even gave the song a second thought.
The emotion she puts into it is the key.

right-track 02-17-2008 01:31 PM

Duffy tops national UK singles chart.

My faith in the great British public takes a turn for the better.

jackhammer 02-25-2008 02:10 PM

Uk only:
Later with Jools Holland with Duffy and (ATTN URBAN) Martina Topley Bird.
BBC iPlayer - Later With Jools Holland: Series 31

right-track 02-25-2008 02:13 PM

I saw this. She stepped in for Alicia Keys?
What did you think Lee...

jackhammer 02-25-2008 02:16 PM

Yeah I like her a lot although the album has got some commercial aspects so I have heard. Let's hope her record company can steer her away from bland pop records.

monellia 02-29-2008 05:27 PM

It's a kewl song yeh, nice concordances between the vocals and percussion, but there's not really anything original about it? and is it just me or is the synthy bit a blatant rip-off of the Doors? I like the vid, it's in a good contrast with the song

right-track 02-29-2008 05:32 PM

I don't know why people keep saying "there's not really anything original about it" (same goes for Winehouse too) when artists break big.
Especially soul singers. I don't think it was ever intended to be original.
It's soul.

adidasss 02-29-2008 05:35 PM

Lulz, I keep seeing banners promoting her album but I just can't force myself to listen to someone who looks like that and is called Duffy...I'm afraid I'll hear some Dixie chicks style country...

right-track 02-29-2008 05:45 PM

'Rockferry' review;

Rockferry is a fantastic album of burning blue soul. In particular, 'Mercy' is a big, booming, finger-wagging sashay worthy of the Supremes. 'Syrup and Honey', with its monochrome echoes of 'I Can't Help Falling in Love With You', is a ballad you can imagine Elvis singing. 'Hanging on Too Long' is a melodramatic belter easily the equal of anything on Back to Black

The magical aura is reinforced by bafflement: how did this shy and fluttery woman-girl, from a remote, Welsh-speaking part of the country, arrive so fully formed, channelling the sounds of far-off Memphis and decades-gone Detroit? Well, it's not quite been a natural-born breeze: Duffy has been working on Rockferry for almost four years. She's co-written with producer Bernard Butler (Sixties-obsessed ex-Suede guitarist) & Jimmy Hogarth (a KT Tunstall collaborator).

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-29-2008 05:46 PM

I read somewhere that David McAlmont & Bernard Butler are involved with her. That may get me interested.

I don't see any evidence of people saying that there's nothing original about artists when they break big. People's comments about Duffy generally imply that she's doing something really original. My opinion is that she is not, therefore I'm inclined to say I don't find her original in a general comment. It goes without saying that originality isn't essential for quality.

That sucks for you and is also kinda depressing in general.

I was referring to these boards and not at you in particular.
Try making a thread about a new artist/band, then watch how many posts comment on how unoriginal they are.

I don't see any evidence to suggest people are saying that, here or elsewhere. And certainly not from her corner.
Her known material so far has been limited to two singles and and a handful of live cover performances.
'Rockferry', reminiscent of Dusty Springfield and the more upbeat 'Mercy', a sixties soul throwback with a Northern Soul influence.
Nothing original there.
What her new album will reveal remains to be seen. The jury's still out.
I doubt we'll be in for anything groundbreaking judging by the album reviews, to put it mildly.

Which she has in abundance. Quality that is.

hay0506 03-02-2008 01:28 PM

I think she is a good enough artiste, but she is the same as a number of her peers, one may say, 'the Amy Winehouse ilk', don't get me wrong she is worthy enough of the praise, but she isn't innovative, she is doing the tried and tested method of almost plagarising Winehouse, her and Adele are just too close to Winehouse's territory for their own good and for my liking

jackhammer 03-04-2008 02:33 PM

Anyone heard the album yet?

wydchr 03-12-2008 03:15 AM

Her album 'Rockferry' is out now and has gone straight to the top of the British charts... are all the tracks original material or are there cover versions in there? Mercy sure sounds like I must've heard it before, it has such a 60's sound to it? all in a good album in my humble opinion although sounding a lot like Amy Whinehouse.

No shit!

And I hope your spelling of Winehouse isn't intentional?

If you have it...I demand an upload.

:pssst: a pm will do nicely.

wydchr 03-13-2008 01:23 AM

right-track sorry for the wrong spelling of Winy Alehouse :)

but can you answer any of my queries regarding the Duffy album.

I don't have the album yet but have listened to it a few times now at mp3sparks and it gets better each time, I'll definitely be getting it.

How and where do I upload songs to anyhow, I'm pretty new to the forum.. these may even be my first posts ;-)

BTW do you or anyone else have 'I Dig You Act' by The O'Jays, I had it on the Esquire label for many years but my ex wife sold off the whole of my soul record collection for a pittance after we split a few years ago and I have been trying to restore the collection since... albeit with mp3's and not the expensive vinyl route. I do actually have a version of the song I am after but it is at such a low bitrate... 32bps that it sounds too tinny to appreciate such a good NS song.

cheers,
David.

right-track 03-13-2008 01:29 AM

Not heard the album yet...sorry.

I have 'I Dig Your Act'.
I'll send you a pm with a compilation if you want.
Chances are I can probably replace your entire collection...make a list, I'll be happy to help.

wydchr 03-13-2008 11:16 AM

Thanks right-track I know this is getting way off topic now but it would probably be easier for me if I saw a list of your collection as ATM I am just collecting the songs which I remember (and my memory's fading fast) or if I hear a track, perhaps I need to visit one of the NS clubs that seem to abound these days and re-acquaint myself with those songs.

I was trying to post a link to the Duffy album (getting back on the right track... 'scuse the pun) but apparently I have to make 15 posts before I am allowed to do that.

cheers,
David.

right-track 03-13-2008 12:49 PM

Just been sent the Duffy album, thanks anyway.

David, I have over 250 soul cd's most of which are Northern Soul. It would be easier if you browse through this Amazon.co.uk: northern soul

Look at the track listings on these albums and chances are I'll have the ones your after on one format, or another.
The ones in the link are solid standards, which I'm sure you'll recognise. You could always browse youtube if you need to put a tune to a name. They've got literally hundreds of vinyl upped by the NS scene community.
Send me a list when your done. Good hunting.

jackhammer 03-13-2008 02:45 PM

I'm just listening to the album now. Stepping Stone is absolutely stunning. A winner so far.

right-track 03-13-2008 02:46 PM

Liking Rockferry from the first listen.

Here's the vocals take for the deep soul Syrup & Honey track, complete with breathy sigh that was included on the final.
Favourite so far.

adidasss 03-13-2008 07:06 PM

Dayum...that girl can sing. =|

Ok, I wants the album. PM.http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ower/judge.gif

wydchr 03-14-2008 03:08 AM

Thanks for the album right-track, wma's not my favourite compression method but beggars can't be choosers as they say, you're a stand-up guy.
Is thiis how the forum works, we all share our music as well as our thoughts or do we just upload lower bitrate tasters of music for interested punters to get an appreciation before buying albums for themselves??

cheers,
David

adidasss 03-14-2008 05:56 AM

The forum is primarily for talking about music. If you want to get music, your first choice (or rather second, if you're loaded and like to own a physical copy) should be torrents or Soulseek. People (should) only ask for uploads if they can't find something. There's plenty of high quality/bitrate stuff out there, you just have to search for it a bit...;)

wydchr 03-15-2008 12:18 AM

Hey adidass,

I've never heard of soulseek is it a pay site, I get most of my music from mp3sparks (formerly allofmp3) which you have to pay for albeit very cheaply typically 10-20 cents per song, payment is in US$. although Northern Soul stuff is quite sparce there but all the new stuff is available. However there is a problem with topping up your credit balance with them at the moment... that's how it works, you create an account and fund the balance with a credit card in order to buy songs... and it makes me wonder if they are once again having problems with the western authorites (it's a Russian site) finding new ways to stop them trading as they did the original allofmp3 site.

Anyway this thread is getting way, way off the topic of Duffy... perhaps a new thread is needed to discuss where to get music from, I'll check out soulseek and see what it's about anyhow, thanks for the heads up.

cheers,
David.

Horrible, horrible twang, Having a Welsh accent worked for Catatonia, the stereophonics, It's just not working for her. It's subtle, but i can hear it and it just does my nut in. I mean I can't dispute she's a fantastic singer otherwise but for me listening to her is like trying to scratch a freckle out of my arm. Shame really.

Clamz 08-11-2008 03:32 AM

Duffy isn't halfbad. I listened to Rockferry 3 months ago and didn't like it, and wrote it off. I liked "Warwick Avenue" and "Syrup and Honey" and that was about it. Now I really like most of it. Lots of good stuff going on.
