Outkast (A modern version of Funkadelic)
 

Lately, I have been listening to all of Outkast's albums from their debut and I must say that there is a lot of similarities between the two and some obvious differences.....

What do you guys think?

Well andre has a huge debt to Prince, and rap was largely created by P funk samples.

yeah I'd say thats about right.

Most of Outkast's albums are concept centric just as P Funk did with their albums.

ATLiens/Aquemeni were extremely funky album imo. Even the ideas of those two albums sounds like something Parliament would've done.

Stankonia was basically a fictional place ruled by a music-governed theocracy

The obvious differences is that Outkast doesn't have a band with a standout star bass player ie. Bootsy Collins.

Well, I would agree with DJ Chameleon, you say their earlier albums are the best, and I agree, but I would say undisputably that one of the best 5 rap albums of all time is their debut: SoutherPlayalisticCadillacMusic, and it doesn't even really get rolling until the second half of the album with the highlight being - get up, get out and get something, it puts you in a stone groove trance, and makes you as mellow than yellow, even though that made no sense, but I'd say my 2 most underrated rap albums are:
Outkast: SouthernPlayalisticCadillacMusic & Naughty By Nature: Poverty's Paradise, these are 2 albums by 2 well known rap groups, that are not recognized for being their best efforts. Yet if you listen to them they're both very solid from start to finish.

i grew up listening to Outkast. and im still in love with there sound and music.

Well, Outkast aren't from outer space.

i believe that is the direction they decide to go after they got noticed. because they had a different edge being from georgia and they voices had a syrupy
funky southern vibe, it was a good move to pick up on that genre and morph it into hip hop. those guys image on the first cd were of hip hop heads from down south but since at the time there was no such thing people of course had to put a name on it for themselves. funk got it's roots from the south and outkast is from the south, but they didn't go visually funkdafied until ataliens.

I would say most definitely heavily influenced and I'm sure Andre and BigBoy would too, all the way from instumentation to costuming. The only album of Outkast's I've put much time into is The Love Below/Speakerboxxx and songs like 'Bowtie' could be straight off a P-funk album if you didn't know better.
