Mesmerizing!

ribbons and right-track, your glowing reports of Tammi Terrell's song, "All I do is think about you," inspired me to listen to it. She does have power and sweetness! Ribbons, I'd be interested sometime in seeing your LIZt of favorite R&B/soul songs that you'd recommend I LIZten to, since I'm pretty much entirely unfamiliar with this genre. :D

Thank you, right-track. I will visit and download.

EDIT: How very sad that she died at age 24!!

right-track, many thanks for posting the link to your Soul Cellar thread. I had not read through it before, but will definitely be doing so now. What a treasure trove of great tracks (most of which I am unfamiliar with). Your write-up on Tammi and "All I Do Is Think Of You" is wonderful.

Interesting coincidence: After you mentioned that "All I Do" is Paul Weller's favorite soul song, I did a further search on that and in process discovered it is his birthday today!

I was a Style Council fan back in the day, and Paul's song "The Paris Match" (the version sung by him on Introducing The Style Council) is also one of my favorite songs of all time.

Very punny, dear Erica! Well, you are the right track LIZtening to right-track's collection. My knowledge of '60s/'70s soul/R&B definitely pales in comparison!

I had a nice LIZurely time LIZtening to right-track's thread, LIZ! ;)

Well, I tried to think if I knew (on my own) of any R&B or Soul song from the 60s or 70s so that I could contribute *something* to this thread. Only one song came to mind: "Do you love me," the 1962 hit single recorded by The Contours for Motown's Gordy Records label.

The only reason I heard this song when I was younger is that it was in the movie Dirty Dancing. I like this song because it is peppy and happy. It makes me want to dance...which is kind of rare these days. I like the beat, the catchy tune, the clapping, and the decreases and then surprise increases in volume.

I also like the singer's voice that can be warm sometimes but scratchy and raw at other times. A very playful and fun song, I feel! I even don't mind that it's about infatuation (since usually I don't like love songs...especially mushy ones...but this one isn't mushy).

So, is this R&B? It isn't soul, is it? Whatever it is, I like it:

For some reason James Carr never made it as big as some of the folks he toured with (Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and James Brown) but man could he sing.

"Dark End Of The Street"

"A Man Needs A Woman"

"You Got My Mind Messed Up"

I especially like the beginning of this song, when you just hear Jackie Wilson's strong voice backed by a little bass. I like the fact that his voice is strong and warm enough to stand alone on its own with a bare minimum of accompaniment. I prefer those moments to the parts with organ and choir.

I was surprised by how short all the songs were! James Carr did sing well. I love the electric guitar phaser effect and was surprised to hear it in the first song you listed.

when i was posting the Jackie Wilson, no pity in the naked city, my lift turned up, so i couldn't print anymore about the song, but his eyes tell it all, he feels the pain of those words, one of my favourite soul tunes...

I wish I had the knowledge and insight on the pre-70s era that he has, the earliest music I can reflect on with any substance would be around 1968 & 1969, R&B/soul and rock.

my friends and i are into the mod scene, which 60'ts soul r&b, Hammond jazz/funk, are the main ingredients, so we all bounce our knowledge of each other, so it's not all me, it's quite an underground scene, but the people who are into it are 100% on it, so there is plenty knowledge, i would feel a fraud taking the credit for printing the In's & outs, of a tune or singer, if i like the vibe i will post the tune and hope the other members get something out of it, was at a mod/soul night in Glasgow last night, it was outstanding, great crowd and even better music...

ace records has an outstanding back catolouge of soul/r&b, hammond jazz/funk, and the cd's come with pages of info, here's a link to thier site, happy hunting...

Brenda Holloway - "All My Love"
Sweet sentiment, lovely voice. I especially like when her singing gets a little scratchy, such as around 2:00

right-track 11-04-2011 07:01 PM

Your taste is impeccable, VEGAN. Your ear too.
What you have to understand is that songs like these were often recorded in one take.
It makes her performance all the more impressive.

^ In this track she makes a slight mistake, singing spy instead of fly at about 1:14.
I'd like to see some modern "soul singers" attempt this one without going blue in the face and passing out before the end of the song.
Possibly my favourite female soul singer of all time.

Will you marry me?

The Fascinating Turnip 11-06-2011 04:44 AM

Here's a tune that blows my mind:

The pairing of a fantastic voice with a really bouncy, danceable tune. Terrific.

'For The Love Of Money'- The O' Jays

'What's Going On?'- Marvin Gaye

'Superstition'- Stevie Wonder

MISTERQCUE 06-18-2014 09:50 PM

Ahhh mannnn, best of the 60's/70's?
I could go DEEEEEP here....but since I'm a newbie, I'll work my way up respectfully.

Rather than go with the obvious, I'll start off with the small/mid-level labels along with classic artists/groups such as;

Fantasy Records- Side Effects (Always There)//Pleasure (Bouncy Lady)//The BlackByrds (Rock Creek Park; BlackByrds Theme)

Warner Bros- Tower of Power (What Is Hip)

Polydor- James Brown (Sex Machine; I could go on....)

Tamla- Eddie Kendricks (Girl You Need A Change of Mind)

Original Records- Dike & The Blazers (Let a Woman Be a Woman & Let a Man Be a Man....) [a record sampled many times by both rap groups & today artists- check it out on YouTube]

I'll stop here & continue in the future.....thanks!

Pinkmoon 02-06-2015 03:33 PM

Al Green - Lets Stay Together

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough
