Can't come up with music in my mind.
Okay, so I've been producing for about a year now and there is one thing that has been driving me insane.
The thing that has been driving me insane is the fact that I can never seem to come up with an idea in my mind. Not a melody, not a chord progression, not a drum pattern. Nothing, my mind is completely blank with nothing on it. My imagination isn't all that active when it comes to this stuff, I can only seem to imagine songs I've heard before and be able to wistle or sing them. This has been the case since November of last year when I first started, most of what I did came from improvising. However, I figured by now I should've been able to come up with this stuff in my mind, I havent however, and I'd like to know how I can be able to do this that way I can rely on my mind to create the stuff that I want to create rather than relying on improvisation. Now, I do listen to a lot of music, I know music theory however I do need to start ear training, and I can play instruments such as Piano, Bass, and Guitar. I don't write and produce music every single day however. I use FL Studio and produce Electronic music. |

Why does it matter? Just play around on an instrument until you come with something, then build from there. I assume that's how most people write music. That's certainly how I do it.

Usually if I come up with the melody in my head, I'm just ripping off another artist subconciously. Most artists play different things til they get something they like.

if you can't come up with music in your mind, come up with it on your axe and shred

Maybe you might have some limited form of a music disorder?

Dude I fear the worst. You have a weak musical imagination. It's not a crime. Millions of music fans and even many active musicians don't have a strong musical imagination (more than you might think).
Here is a test. Take a song you know well. Write out the chord structure, then using that same structure see if you can apply a different melody. Hope I'm wrong. |
