working on a short story
Charlie Rowl the Barn Owl
Charlie Rowl was a young barn owl. He lived with his mother up a tree in a park. The city where he nested had lots of animals that rested in the dark. For the owls, it was infested with the people that would prowl around at night. They would swerve, not walking straight, they would argue, they would shout and they would fight. As the humans brawled, they would fall and have to crawl into a building with a light. So Charlie did assume that the people all around were the cause of all the problems in his town. As much as his mother said that when the owls went to bed the people had another side to them, Charlie was convinced that if he got the humans out goodness in this town would flourish and would sprout. Then made of twigs and bark and thinking long and hard he sketched a plan to put out the fire of man. But just as he began to recruit a willing clan it was time for Charlie Rowl to go to bed. But Charlie couldn’t sleep as the sun raised its head so he took a little peek at morning’s light. Much to his surprise and not to his delight the humans began to rise in front of him. They stepped outside their house with a walk more like a bounce and a big, smiling, friendly, happy grin. Walking through the park one saw Charlie in his nest and made a kind remark about his feathered breast. “What a beautiful owl” they said, “what a gorgeous shade of brown.” “Oh I do hope he comes down so I can take a closer look.” Charlie had never heard a person speak these words so he still was quite unsure if they were fine. So just as the person asked, he flew down from his pine and did bask in the compliments from them. In this bit of time, Charlie was made to learn that it wasn’t humans but the night that got them mad. The more that he observed, the more it made him glad that he did not put his plans into gear. And from that moment on Charlie always asked if there was more that wasn’t quite what it appeared. |
