News Theme Tunes

HI, I'm trying to make a news theme tune but when I try it doesn't sound that good at all. I'm using Cuebase elements 6 and a midi keyboard (no real instruments). The ones i make sound empty and thin. I'm going for a mix between a channel 7 news remix, the channel 9 national news, and sky news (go on youtube and type in WAtvMusic for the 7 and 9 one (its the link to the chanel) and type in sky news theme for sky). So an orchestral feel basically with tension (like a typical news theme). I know I have to make my songs sound thicker, but in the songs I've listed to I can hear about 3 instruments in all of them which is what I put in mine. Any ideas?
