Doesn't matter. Some of the best lyricists were manic depressants. As long as you don't write every song about how some girl broke your heart (1 or 2 is okay)
Observe and write what you see. Chav culture, pubs, clubs, the subway. The area you grew up should give you inspiration. Another tip: Fictional stories. If you can find my songwriting journal I've done 3 songs, 1 about social issues/people (lawyers, vicars etc.), a story that would seem fictitious and a story about a couple that got divorced and it changed things. I'd recommend imagination. Try being a story teller in a folk sort of style, there are no limits then. The lyrics can be as obscure or as vivid as you want. That's what I enjoyed doing - storytelling. |
