Having trouble writing MUSIC for songs
Hey everyone, I noticed in this topic there is countless numbers of threads about writing songs in the lyrical sense, but hardly any about writing songs in the musical sense - so I hope I'm posting in the right area but anyway here goes...
I was just wondering how you guys go about writing MUSIC for songs. What kind of creative process do you follow? I've recently joined up to a new band and am finding it difficult to create music. I've never had this problem before as a solo artist and in previous bands, but I'm just finding it hard to create stuff musically (not lyrically) and collaborate with others. I play piano, and in particular I find it difficult to create stuff with my guitarist. So yeah, just general how you go about creating new music, new sounds. Creative processes you follow, etc. Do you just mess around until something sounds good? Do you follow a particular process? Any ideas would be great! |

Well, the only thing I could advise is to find the mood that is created with the music you already have. Then, once you establish that, you can use one to compliment the other.
For example: Let's say you have a piece of music with your piano. First, figure out the mood that is established or goes along with what you have so far. Then, work with the guitarist to go along with that mood possibly. Or vice/versa. But then again, it all depends on how YOU write music best. There's no one way that is the RIGHT way to make music. But I'm only an amateur, as well. This is the best I can offer. |

Thanks for the advice... you're right, I think because I've just joined this band I need to find my 'sound' within them and our 'mood' of each piece.
I'm just so frustrated everything I write seems so mediocre! Was just curious what people's methods for writing music were... |
