Science Vs. God
Science Vs. God
I sit in a chair, That becomes less and less ergonomic. Flipping through pages of textbooks. I look for the answer to an impossible question. Why do people act without compassion Without some feeling of remorse? I feel like I’m praying To some super-scientific god For some answers, some insight Into people’s hatred. Intently focused on these pages Revealing the human psyche But I don’t care about firing neurons. Nor statistics or cerebellums. I care about why we do what we do. Why we love, why we hate, Why we ****, and why we rape. Why we take a bullet for someone, And shoot someone else. But I can find no solace in science. And falsehoods flood through religion. In religion all I see is the hate, That I so deeply question. Murder and bigotry united. All I’m looking for is a little peace. Of the mind and in the world. I feel like I’m praying To some pseudo-scientific god For answers, I have to find myself. I don’t want to hear the theories of Fred Phelps or Jerry Falwell Or stories in some fantastical land Of virgin impregnation, and A boat’s massive population. I want to find the answers To why we are the evil thing that we call civilized. But I can find no solace in science. And falsehoods flood through religion.

Yeah...if we could get back to...y'know critiquing my piece, that'd be absolutely fantastic.

I like it. The subject is very interesting. My favorite part is the second half of the second stanza. The only thing I question is the rhythm, or lack thereof. Because of this the piece isn't really unified and doesn't flow real well.
I just wrote an 8 page paper for sociology on the threat of fundamentalist Christians, and the stuff I read about Phelps, Falwell, and other fundamentalists literally made me sick. As for why people are how they are, I believe all evil stems from 2 sources. The first is greed (which includes jealousy), which is rooted in the survival instincts we inherited from our primative anscestors, so is scientifically explainable. The second is baseless hate or spite, which most human beings are indoctrined into through society and the teachings of their parents. This includes racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. I can't say where this hate originally started (I could probably tie it to greed if I really tried), but it has been passed down for so long that people don't even know why they hate, they just do. Its part of humanity's willingness to conform and belief anything they are told when they are young. And if you're looking for peace and comfort, don't look towards religion or science for the answers, look within yourself. Yeah, that was lame.
