A Rap Challenge

Hey people I have a challenge for you. One of my friends wants to start writing rap songs. He's trying to write a rap at the moment.

It's about his dad and how much he hates him. How his dad cheated on his mom and beat his little sister. His dad always comes home drunk from work and starts fighting with everyone.

I'm just wondering if anyone can help. I'm no good at writing rap songs so that's why I'm asking for your help.

Tell him to work out the actual story that he wants to tell, in terms of the plot, how does he want it to end, how does he want it to start? Then tell him to write as much about it as he can without trying to make it in rap form. Get him to read it to you in this non-rap form and suggest changes to the plot etc. that might be needed for it to make more sense. When he's happy with the story that he wants to tell he can then put it into rhyming form - obviously making it rhyme will restrict what can be included, but he should be able to put something together that makes sense from this.

What would really make sense is to get some help,
I'm not sure a rap song is going to help him

Just sayin.................

Good point. Write the rap first though, then get some help before they hypnotise the lyrics out of you.

That isn't a plot, that's an outline. Do you just read the blurb on the back of the book and then think you've read it, or see a film summary and then think you know every scene in that movie? The answer is no!

He can really afford to hash out the details of what he wants to say. If he just works from the outline and uses that as his overall plan for the rap then he could get the whole thing down in about 6-10 lines, which isn't much of a rap. Such as:

"You may be my dad, but I despise you.
Coming back from work each day stinking of booze.
You beat my sister and you cheat on my mum.
It makes me sick that we're related, I'm ashamed to be your son."

Ok, that was 4 lines and I covered everything that was given in the outline. Like I said, he needs to put all the details down beforehand if its going to have direction and substance. Its like planning an essay, you can produce something decent without planning sometimes, but it works much better if you work it out, line by line almost, beforehand.
