I find occasionally wandering off the major/minor scales into a more modal territory often helps create more interesting melodies :)

There are lots of tutorials, videos, pages etc. out there...

Plankton, Arch Enemy somehow (almost) always manage to fit in very melodic guitars in the general fury of their music - oftentimes lingering on various minor scales of course....
