It was perfect as background music when you had people over or whatever, but it's because it doesn't require much listening to the lyrics...

Well.... I generally just label "pop" as anything that's extremely popular. To me and my friends, we use "pop" to be short for "popular", usually not taking specific genres into thought as much....
