I used to love Queen ... last year i listened to them non-stop ... but than i didn't know any other band, so Queen at that stage seemed amazing.
When I found out about the bands that influenced Queen, and all the other legendary musicians, Queen didn't seem that great.

Anyhow, my favorite Queen songs is: The Show Must Go on and Bohemian Rhapsody.

*** I got at first the Best Of Queen, than I downloaded their discography, there was no extra good songs ... I feel the best of is enough.

SaphiaGlam 10-22-2009 01:23 PM

I'm a freakin' IMMENSE Queen fan.
Tie Your Mother Down, Somebody to Love, Innuendo, The Show Must Go On...all instant classics.
I cannot get my head round Don't Stop Me Now, it's overplayed, McFly did a cover ffs, which pretty much ruined it for me forever.
I love Bo Rhap, what a great excuse to headbang for the third part xD The Wayne's World scene with that in it is so great xD
It'd be impossible to choose a favourite album, but I have all their dvd's, some rare live footage, a bootleg Japan concert from the 70's and obviously all their music!
Been a fan my whole life, seen them live with Paul Rodgers twice, and will never stop loving them!

Axiomatic Wiki 11-27-2009 02:18 PM

I was on a huge Queen binge last year. They were for a bit of time my favorite band. Their songs such as You take my Breath Away, March of the Black Queen, My Fairy King, The Prophets song, and 39 are some of the greatest to ever exist. Favorite album would have to be, Night at the Opera, with Day at the Races, and news of the world following close behind. Queen 2 also deserves mention.

Sort of off topic, Freddie Mercury is one of the most talented people I can think of, not just vocally, but in pretty much every thing he did, from boxing to table tennis, to art, to fashion design. He rarely every failed at anything, besides not dying of aids =[

adidasss 11-30-2009 12:43 PM

I finally got a hold of their discography, the first two albums seem rather uneventful so I fast forwarded to A night at the opera. I'd just like to note that Bohemian Rapsody could have been made into at least 4-5 great songs. I absolutely love the bit with "So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye". The drumming's top notch. I was gonna ask a silly question whether anyone could recommend other bands or even rock songs that are equally fun as that particular bit but I suppose no one really did it better than them. That train of thought lead me to download The Who's and T-Rex's discographies though, and to start re-listening to Led Zeppelin. Forgot how good the latter are. :\

I'm all for a bit of bashing of the old sacred cows, and this country has many. I can handle people slagging The Beatles, The Stones and The Who for instance providing they know what the hell they are talking about. When i think about it though, i don't think i really dislike any of the British rock and roll sacred cows.

Well, maybe one and thats Queen.

I cant STAND Queen. I always hated what i deem to be the OTT theatrics and the effect Mercury's voice has, for me, is equal to the way a great deal of people react to the sound of nails on a chalkboad. And im an Iron Maiden fan!

However my Queen knowledge comes exclusively from whichever of the numerous collection and compilation albums have been released which i couldn't avoid growing up and a lot of people who know my music taste at least to some degree have told me i should listen to some of their earlier material and then make my mind up. So fairs fair, anyone willing to offer me anything to check out that may alter my opinion?

Check this song out mojopunk. I doubt you have already heard it since it is semi obscure, from their second album. If I had to pic one song that best represented Queen sound, it would be this one. One of their most complex works, impossible for them to play live, it really shows off their talent when it comes to their ability to create amazing compositions. Bohemian Rhaspsody is like a watered down and more popish version, of this song

Huge Maiden Fan here too! Up the Irons!

You do need to listen to queen more deeply. They are awesome and one of the deepest catalogues in Rock.

For someone like you who has a taste for the harder stuff I'd recommend these albums:

Queen II (although it is a bit dramatic)
Sheer Heart Attack

Songs to get you into them quickly:

Stone Cold Crazy
Sheer Heart Attack
It's Late
Tear it Up

Mojo 12-01-2009 07:50 AM

I've just listened to Tear It Up, which really just seems to epitomise the overblown stadium rock sound that i cant get away with. Not in general, just the way Queen do it.

Flick of the Wrist which kind of sums up my opinion of my Brian May. Brian May is technically very talented, can't take that away from him but some of the guitar work going on in this song just isn't going anywhere and it's being drowned out by the rest of the band and the vocals...im struggling to see why it's there or what it's achieving. I just don't feel it.

White Queen which isnt so bad i guess but still Mercury's voice is going right through me. This song, like a lot of Queen material, makes me feel like it would be better suited to an opera than a rock band. Some of those harmonies make me cringe.

Stone Cold Crazy i had heard before but just listened to it again and i'll give you this one. Theres still a moment or two where the vocals annoy me but in general i do like this song. Great riffing, uptempo, packs a punch and oddly seems to suit Queen.

The March of the Black Queen is a weird one. I can see why some Queen fans would consider this among their best but again i think the reasons i gave above should tell the story as to why im not feeling it. Very complex, it's like the band are on a completely different wavelength to mercury and yet put it altogether and it works but im not feeling this either.

Yeah, i just don't think Queen are ever gonna be my bag, are they? :p:

Thom Yorke 09-22-2011 08:12 PM

Mercury is tough to do, but this guy nailed it.

Argento 10-17-2011 05:36 PM

... now, if they just had 10% of Queen's talent...

musicaddictguy 10-20-2011 08:56 PM

Queen is one of my favorite rock band since I was in high school. My friend (he was older than me, he was in college at the time) introduced me to Queen and became my favorite since then. Now I heard ranged variety of music, but Queen is always in my mp3list.

Anyway, I just listened to 'Queen II' for the first time, and have regained some faith in this band. It's really a gorgeous album.

Explores the operatic ballad type sound that they really were masters without the cheesy 70s radio rock bull****.

Howard the Duck 10-23-2011 03:02 AM

if you want me to get in depth

i pretty much like the entire run from Queen II until News of the World

and Innuendo is a pretty strong comeback

FETCHER. 10-26-2011 12:49 PM

Alot of the time lately I've been listening to queen on my mates LPs. There's nothing better than the sound of music coming from a record player. Esp, some of my all time favourite songs.

cozypowellsdrumkit 08-18-2012 10:51 PM

I have all but the last 2. I couldn't handle the idea of Made In Heaven. It killed me. That was one hell of a day. November 24, 1991. Freddie Mercury and Eric Carr died.

I don't know where you hear such inaccurate information, but that is certainly false. Legend has it, Freddie had a piano built in to the headboard on his bed. Freddie was double jointed so was able to bend his hands in all manners of ways and one night had a particular melody in his head. He played this in bed and suddenly thought he was on to something and progressed with painting this beautiful musical landscape in the studio. The rest, they say, is history.

No he did not sing Opera before joining the band. Freddie was in several bands before Queen, more notably a band called Ibex. Do you just make this stuff up?

Queen did NOT essentially start power metal. What makes you think this? What do you base this judgment on?

Hugely creative geniuses who sold well over 300 million albums worldwide? Each band member writing number one hit after hit? Highly innovative pioneers inside the studio (mostly during the 70's)? A huge back catalogue of music which has stood the test of time and still gets regular airplay on the radio worldwide today? A band who wrote an eclectic mixture of music, making it hard for the band to be pigeon-holed exclusively in to one genre? Huge bombastic live stadium shows? One of the greatest vocalists/showmen/personalities the world has ever seen?

You're right, whats to like? Idiot. Enjoy your mediocrity.

There are far stranger musical connections than this, but sure there is a link between Queen and power metal.

Agree with a lot of this, but the band got away with a lot of lesser songs thanks to Freddie Mercury's vocal ability to carry them through.

I see. I do not research the profile of the person posting their opinions, I merely respond. I thought this was a place in which music enthusiasts gathered to discuss the art. I did not realise it was an online creche.

I think you could argue that Queen influenced a lot of power metal bands. Blind Guardian being a notable example; but to say Queen essentially started power metal is something completely different.

I do agree with this. Particularly in the 80s, Queen had some weaker material which was carried by the sheer vocal ability of Freddie.

It was relevant to the post. A post count means nothing; I am still a human being with the ability to form an opinion. You need to come to terms with that.

Okay, how the heck did Queen start power metal? They did have an influence on thrash metal, I mean, Stone Cold Crazy. But power metal sure is something completely different.

You won't get the full experience, though. They won't be the same as they were then since John Deacon left the band, and Freddie Mercury DIED.

Dude, they're not even together with any vocalist right now, thus I didn't mention actually seeing them. Although, even if it wouldn't be the full experience, Queen + Paul Rodgers would be pretty bad ass live.

BTW, enough with the hate on Queen + Paul Rodgers! Yes, it doesn't sound exactly like Queen, it's not supposed too, thus it's called Queen + Paul Rodgers, combining the sounds of both artists. Also, "Say It's Not True" is an awesome track.

Let's not forget their George Martin in (Reinhold) Mack. Very much like The Beatles with Martin, I can say that it was his Production and Engineering that seriously made their music sound good. Same goes for his work with Sparks as well...and, to the very few who can forgive him for "Rock Me Tonight", Billy Squire. He also was part of the technical details in various other bands like Deep Purple (and I think a Jon Lord solo), ELO, and singers like Donna Summer in her Giorgio Moroder years (to some, her very best).

Brian May: Knighthood comes with 'a little bit more clout'
Quote:

LONDON -- Queen guitarist Brian May is now a “Sir.”

May, who also has a doctorate in astrophysics and is an animal welfare advocate, received a knighthood Friday as part of the U.K.'s annual New Year's Honors list. The Queen guitarist, who was honored for services to music and charity, said he hopes the knighthood will give him “a little bit more clout.”

“Maybe a few more people will listen to me than would otherwise, you know, if it’s Sir Brian on the phone,” said May, who spoke to The Associated Press via Zoom from his house in Windlesham, Surrey.

He was among hundreds of artists, community leaders and athletes who were recognized on the first such list to be signed off by King Charles III.
