Queen were pompous which is why they were who they were and are legends in their own right. Everything they set out to do was on a grand scale to be bigger and better then any other act that was around at the time but they didn't do it in an irritating fashion (at least not to me) and Mercury 9 out of 10 backed it up and delivered amazing performances and vocals. Queen were also very good at not taking themselves too seriously at times... the "I want to break free" video should be enough proof of this. Lyrics like "We Are The Champions" could be argued to have been written with everybody, who is in the spotlight and determined to stay on top, in mind and not just about Queen. Mercury himself once said "We are the champions is a winners song" this could be applied to everybody.

Really good analysis. A Night at the Opera is the one they really hit a homer with I think. '39 is a great song and the album is endlessly entertaining.

The great thing about Queen is, they took the sophistication and grandeur of older genres of music and applied it to rock, and while there were already prog bands doing it, Queen took their influenes and turned it into a uber sophisticated kind of pop music that was totally unique then and still is today. I know not everyone is a Queen fan, but they deserve respect dammit.

Sheer Heart Attack and Night at the Opera are amazing albums, pomp rock at it's finest.

Thank you. Yeah, they were basically given a high quality studio, tons of time and complete creative control for "A Night At the Opera". This was where they were really trying to prove themselves, spending so much time on layering and such. The end of "Good Company" when May performs that big band type arrangement, with ONLY guitars, blows my mind every time I hear it. May said he probably would not put that much time into something like that today, unless it was completely necessary for the song but back then it was all new and exciting.

you're welcome, I am a bit biased having tons of respect and admiration for Queen but off stage they always came across as down to earth guys who were just doing their jobs on stage... and doing it well.

I don't think they could help it, they were all so advanced musically and mentally... it really was like a super group in a way. They really should be respected but then again their are tons of acts that don't get the respect they deserve.

Default Death of a Legend: Freddie Mercury

On the 5th September 1946(1946-09-05) in Stone Town, Zanzibar, a legend was born.
That legend would go onto become an idol in the music industry and eventually dia of AIDs.

On the 5th September 1946(1946-09-05) in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Farrokh Bulsara was born. As Parsis, the family practiced the Zoroastrian religion, many people were ignorant to his actual background. He had one younger sister, Kashmira. Farrokh went to St.Peters boarding school for boys in Panchgani where he excelled in all classes and several sports, especially boxing. He is rumoured to have had a mean left hook. He formed a school boy band 'The Hectics', in which he played the Piano, he could even listen to the radio and then play it back on his piano. During the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution, he and his family fled Zanzibar and moved to London where he studied art and graphic design. It was also at St. Peter's where he began to call himself "Freddie".

After having had jobs at Heathrow airport and Kensington market, Freddie decided to join a band called Ibex, which later disbanded, and then a second band called Sour Milk Sea, which also broke up fairly early.

In April 1970, he joined with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, from the band 'Smile', to form a band called Queen. Despite disruption in the band over the name choice, it eventually settled as 'Queen'. It's confirmed to be around this time that he legally changed his name to Freddie Mercury.

He had many early influences including Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Liza Minnelli. - Freddie Mercury: "One of my early inspirations came from Cabaret. I absolutely adore Liza Minnelli. The way she delivers her songs—the sheer energy."
Mercury had a recorded range of Four octaves, talking in a baritone voice but generally singing in more of a tanor.

Mercury always had a strange style to his song writing, using may confusing chords in one song, and then simple chords in the next. In the 'Greatest Hits' album, he wrote 9/17 songs, "Seven Seas of Rhye", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy", "We Are the Champions", "Bicycle Race", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Play the Game". Unbelieveable to many, Mercury actually claimed he struggled to read music.

Of all the things that Freddie Mercury is famous for, the most prominent one is his breath taking live performances. "One of Mercury's most notable performances with Queen took place at Live Aid in 1985, during which the entire stadium audience of 72,000 people clapped, sang, and swayed in unison. Queen's performance at the event has since been voted by a group of music executives as the greatest live performance in the history of rock music. The results were aired on a television program called 'The World's Greatest Gigs'."

During Spring 1987, Freddie Mercury was diagnosed with AIDs, Mercury actually publicly denied that this was the case and claimed that he had tested negative for the virus.

On November the 21st, 1991, Mercury contacted Queen's manager.
On November the 23rd, 1991, this statement was released on Mercury's behalf.
-"Following the enormous conjecture in the press over the last two weeks, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS. I felt it correct to keep this information private to date to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has come now for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth and I hope that everyone will join with my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease. My privacy has always been very special to me and I am famous for my lack of interviews. Please understand this policy will continue."
He died little more thana day later and had a religous ceremony despite his lack of practise in recent years. His body was cremated at Kensal Green Cemetery.
