Music recommendation for fan of '50s-'70s music?
 

I am looking for some new music to listen to. My favourite groups/artists are The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Eagles, Simon and Garfunkel, John Denver, and Billy Joel. I've listened to bits of the more famous bands like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, etc.
I'm hoping that somebody will know of a music artist I will enjoy. I can't say I enjoy metal at all. Something with a melody, a bit of harmony, and ideally a piano/keyboard presence.

Tame Impala makes some good Beatles-esque psychedelic music that you might enjoy.

Good discussion and other examples were in the "Pop Music of yesterday vs. Pop Music of Today" thread starting about here. Surell got me hooked on Animal Collective back in June in that thread and I've been checking out a lot of other, similar/related bands since then. Lots of good stuff out there, contrary to popular belief.

Based on your list of bands you like (down to and including John Denver), you sound like you have extremely similar musical tastes as me, so I might be your go-to guy at this point on recent musical recommendations.

New music now, or a past artist that you haven't mention which would be new to you? Well I'll do my best and try to answer both.

I take it that you already know these bands, but if you haven't I think starting off with their greatest hits - imo they're well worth it.

1. The Byrds
2. The Hollies
3. The Kinks
4. The Tremeloes
5. The Turtles
6. America
7. Chicago
8. Jim Croce
9. The Guess Who
10. 5th Dimension - if you like Simon and Garfunkel then it's worth noting they have pretty much the same studio musicians, but they are more Soul and 60s Psychedelia-Pop.

I like a lot of bands that have a retro sound, or are revivalist of a particular genre.

1. Big Star - they were influential to bands like REM etc. they worth a listen.
2. Nick Lowe/Dave Edmunds/Rockpile - can't say enough about them, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmund played on each other albums, did an album under the Rockpile name, but legal issues kept them lasting as a band. Dave Edmunds does some very good cover-songs on his early records.
3. Robert Gordon - Not as popular as the Stray Cats or Brian Setzer, more like a forgotten Rockabilly revivalist. Had two of the best guitar player that played on his records Link Wray and Danny Gatton.
4. The Wallflowers - Jakob Dylan, the son of Bob Dylan, leads the band. They are one of my favorite bands from the 90s.
5. Andy Bopp (the Miracle Brah, Alto Verde)
6. First Aid Kit - Folk duo from Sweden. I think they have a very 70ish sound to them.
7. The Young Veins - Idk if you'll like them, but I think they are Beatle-sque, two founding members were from Panic! at the Disco.
8. oF Montreal - I thought Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse it reminded me of something that Brian Wilson would do in his Psychedelia era.

Kinda sounds old-timey. Vocalist sounds a little bit like Mike Love from The Beach Boys.

How about Harry Nilsson? Everyone can use a little Nilsson in their life.

Thank-you. After reading a bit about Tame Impala, I noticed that Parker stated his main influence is one of my Mom's favourite bands: Supertramp.

I wasn't expecting to find such good music right off the bat. I'd never heard of either band. They're not the type I hear played much on my local station.

I was initially thinking of current music, but new old music is excellent too.
I've heard of almost all of the older groups you mentioned, but I've never really listened to them, with the exceptions of a bit of The Byrds, The Kinks, Chicago and Jim Croce.
And I'd heard of none of the newer groups with the exceptions of First Aid Kit and The Wallflowers.

I've heard a bit of Each Other, and I quite like.

The only thing I've heard by Nilsson is his cover of You Can't Do That, which was pretty cool.
