I can agree with what surell said. When it came to working it the studio, it seems that page was a pretty thought out guy. His guitar playing showed some structure and planning compared to people like Hendrix and iommi. Those guys were just kind of all over the place, based more on improvisation.
Who would you guys say is more technical? |

Page by a fair amount. Sure the early stuff was really just pentatonic wanking but his production method and later compositions show some serious technical virtuosity.
The average Sabbath riff might be a bit more technically demanding than the average Led Zep riff but I can't think of anything Iommi composed that compares to something like Achilles Last Stand. |

I'd have to agree with that. I think iommi has stuff that trumps some of pages but overall, I'd have to give it to page; Even though I'm not a huge zeppelin fan, I like sabbath more. Id be lying if I said page wasn't more technical. But that's not to take anything away from iommi, he's just as good as page on many occasions.
The song "don't start too late" has a very zeppelinesque feel to it, until it kicks in and gets heavy as ****. I'll take that song over nearly any zepp song of the like. |

Oh please forgive me Iommi, these are both guitar gods in my book.
The only reason I choose Page is the same reason as Tonic, he was more diverse, and I feel he puts something extra with his playing. Iommi is the cleaner, I guess you could call it technical guitarist, for sure, Page got a bit sloppy sometimes but you can't complain cause it always still sounds good. |

One of my favorite iommi moments would have to be planet caravan. The chord work is so simple but it works so well with the song with its continuous droning quality. It provides such an eerie feeling. When you combine that with his brilliant, jazzy solo the outcome is unlike anything I've ever heard that pre-dates it. I don't think I've heard anything from page that stands up to planet caravan.
