I searched the site and could not find a thread dedicated to The Big O (no not that Big O), Roy Orbison. Hands down greatest voice in rock.

Believe it or not my first concert was actually Roy Orbison. He's my dad's favorite musician so he took me to see him when I was about 8 or 9. The Crickets opened. From what I remember it was a pretty good show and I'm definitely glad I got to see him before he died.

Nice story. I was 3 1/2 when he died, way too soon. At least he died on a high note with a hit song and new solo and Traveling Wilbury albums. BTW my first concert was Kokomo era Beach Boys.

I feel pretty lucky that I saw him when I did. It was 85 or 86, so probably one of his last tours. I don't think I was aware of it at the time but in retrospect it is nice that he was in the midst of a little bit of a comeback when he died. I do remember thinking at the time that it was hard to imagine that one day people from my favorite band dying. At that age my favorite band was Pink Floyd and, well, two of them are gone now.

That's cool that you got to see the Beach Boys BTW!

In regards to older artists dying that's why I brought my daughter to see Neil Young with me this past April. She was clearly the youngest person at the concert, but I think it's important that a child's first concert is by a memorable artist not a throw away.

Thanks for posting this Captain, glad to see Mr. Orbison getting a thread on these boards. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing him live, I wasn't born yet when he died. Regardless, I still enjoy his music.

massive fan of his 50s stuff

his 60s stuff are pretty hit and miss, though the last album was rock-solid

have seen roy 4 times here in nz,great every time,a value for dollar act,timless.

The riff in "Pretty Woman" is one of the first real prominent guitar riffs in Rock n Roll. It spawned legendary riffs such as "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones, "Day Tripper" by The Beatles, "Mr. Soul" by Buffalo Springfield, and "Layla" by Eric Clapton - just to name a few.
