Yeah, sort of, but with production to help it sound more mainstream. I think Soundgarden, AIC and Pearl Jam sound way different from that though. AIC and Soundgarden were heavier and more like metal than hardcore. Pearl Jam was something different entirely, no hardcore or metal influence at all. Most of the original Seattle "grunge" bands were just hardcore acts, Nirvana included.
I guess they have basic similarities in that they were mainstreamy alternative rock sounding, which is probably the criteria for being labeled a grunge band.

I think the problem is that bands that were labeled grunge early on later became part of the broader alternative rock movement. Nirvana's first album,
Bleach, is a pretty good example of that classic Subpop grunge sound. Both of their follow up albums sound nothing like it, but by the time the mainstream media had caught on, they were kind of arbitrarily labled "grunge" in all the zeitgeist, along with the rest of the grunge and hardcore bands who experimented with more radio-friendly pop styles.
