I think the problem is that bands that were labeled grunge early on later became part of the broader alternative rock movement. Nirvana's first album, Bleach, is a pretty good example of that classic Subpop grunge sound. Both of their follow up albums sound nothing like it, but by the time the mainstream media had caught on, they were kind of arbitrarily labled "grunge" in all the zeitgeist, along with the rest of the grunge and hardcore bands who experimented with more radio-friendly pop styles.
