Neil Young is so much better

Cuthbert 03-24-2013 03:18 AM

What's the best Neil Young albums to start with?

Of Bob Dylan I've heard:

Blonde on Blonde
Blood on the Tracks*
Tempest
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Highway 61 revisited

* = personal favourite.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Then maybe Zuma, Harvest

Overall i would say Bob

But Neil is a better singer

they're both good i can't say i completely choose one over the other

Psychedub Dude 03-24-2013 12:21 PM

Neil Young for sure, for me at least. His acoustic performances were some of the best I've ever seen. His voice is pretty amazing and he hits some insanely high notes flawlessly.

If you like Bob Dylan a whole bunch, then I'd go for On the Beach. A lot of the songs sound very Dylan-inflected, even considering Neil's love for the man; it's in his vocal delivery especially, but also the way he does meandering folky tunes on the second half/side (I mean that in a good way). It's also one of Young's most eclectic works and one of his darkest in the era he wrote it. Otherwise, Zuma's probably my favorite, Harvest is the easiest starting point and is also pretty damn good, Tonight's the Night is among his most rockinest and is also very dark and moody, and Ragged Glory is a great late era one, with real heavy jams and all. Psychedelic Pill, his latest, is also a really interesting album, with loooong heavy jams and more subdued folky numbers. It's very nostalgic in a neat way.

OH: Everyone Knows... is realllly good too, I just haven't listened to it in awhile. His debut is very similar to it, and they're both great, more in line with the folk rock he initially got famous for.

I'd agree. I think Neil is a bit more "listenable" but I think Bob was more thoroughly creative with his songwriting abilities.

Neil young. Hes managed to stay relevant

Surell 04-04-2013 09:17 PM

I'd probably say they've both remained about equally relevant in similar circles as of late, though Young may have a slightly younger edge of the fanbase, Dylan older, so still about equal.

I don't like putting great artists in competition like this. It doesn't really make sense to me, they are both brilliant in their own way.

I have to go with Neil Young on this one. Personally, I'm just not that big of a Bob Dylan fan.

Neil wins this battle every day of the week for me. His singing voice is more appealing than Dylan's ever was, he can play that guitar like a boss, he can write crazily beautiful songs that Dylan can't even touch, and his whole style is just better.

Nobody but Neil can rip into a heavy song like "Powderfinger" and still make it sound beautiful, much thanks to the guitar playing.

amorican shakedown 06-11-2013 09:40 AM

both amazing BUT neil does age better

but his solo in "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat" is pretty killer

Bob Dylan plays the intro which is alright, but the killer solo on that track is played by Robbie Robertson. Someone a few pages back also mentioned Dylan's guitar work on Blood on the Tracks, but all of the cool steel guitar work is played by Buddy Cage. Personally, I'd say Dylan's best guitar work is featured on the albums "Good As I Been To You" and "World Gone Wrong." As for Dylan vs. Young, I'm going with Dylan. Neil is great, but songs such as "Shelter From The Storm", "Desolation Row", "Mr. Tambourine Man", and the more recent "Red River Shore" put Dylan head and shoulders above Neil.

As much as I like Neil, I choose Bob cos nobody compares with him. Neil maybe more talented meldot writer but Bob's voice and words rule

Penny Lane 64 01-27-2014 12:51 PM

Neil Young

Dylan every time...Love his music, and I even love his gritty voice.
