I hear from people a lot of the time that their reason for not liking ZZ top is because of the simplicity of their music. Its not very complex at all and really quite simple to figure out. Compared to someone like Hendrix but music doesnt always have to be complex to be appreciated. Some of ZZ Tops riffs were terriffic imo and had a great catchy sound to them. I will admit it took me some time to come around to liking his vocals but in time I came around. I should give them more credit than I do for what they've done in music. Honestly I just never think to listen to them or discuss them. Even though over the years ive liked most the stuff that they have put out.

I used to see things in the same way, as far as the simplicity aspect of certain bands years ago. I remember a time when ZZ Top, AC/DC, and other bands of the blues rock genre were just not up to par musically for my taste. Of course, mainly because I was into other bands of progressive rock from the same era like Rush, Yes, and so on. Simplicity musically is just as inspiring and influential as the technical aspect to me now these days. Just as a lot of bands don't receive the recognition they deserve by the critics until years and sometimes decades after the peak of their popularity and career. Ive seen this happen with so many different bands and artist through the years. I guess that I have always been lucky enough to find the good in almost every genre of music, just some genre's are more to my liking than others. Its always a good policy to stay open minded as a musician, or as a music enthusiast in my opinion.
