The Cellar Dwellers Debate
In conjunction with The Cellar Dwellers Special radio show tonight, I've created a link on my myspace page to this page so people can have their chance to debate tonights show properly.
Tonights show is counting down the top nine most underrated bands from the 1960's as voted for by me...... The criteria? Well they must be good and my gran must not have heard of them, therefore out goes The Velvet Underground for example :(, they also must have had an album featured on the show over the past year, so no West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band or Soft Machine unfortunately :( After the show I'll be posting the official countdown and my reasons here. So the show? The Cellar Dwellers Special Monday 4th May 2pm - Los Angeles 5pm - New York 10pm - UK 11pm - Europe Live Stream http://www.pureradio.org.uk/silo/fil...-streaming.m3u] Happy Debating. |
ah, show's going to be awesome. wish i could chime in, but i've got a final exam at the same time.
you know your stuff Ben, keep up the good work. |
That sounds really good though i'm not sure i'm going to be around. If i am i'll be tuned in.
|

Electric Prunes! :D Yesyesyes love it

And the results are starting to come through
http://www.terrascope.co.uk/MyBackPa...20Sundazed.jpg 9) The Electric Prunes Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, no other group personified underground West Coast Psychedelia better than this group, creators of two fine albums in 1967. Ultimately, The Prunes became a victim of record label shenanigans, but away from politics when it came to fuzz filled fun, there was no one better in California Essentials http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpg I Had Too Much (To Dream Last Night) (1967) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgUnderground (1967) |
I've always preferred Underground, it just always appealed to me more. They are definitely going on my 1001 albums list at some point (probably soon incase I forget)

8) Turquoise Once next-door neighbours of the Davies brothers in the Muswell Hill area of London, this fine four piece had a publishing deal with Decca via Apple in the late sixties whilst under the guidance of The Rolling Stones management team. Oddly, despite having created several unbelievably marvellous songs, they never made an album, and even more oddly fizzled out in 1969 without having a single hit.Essential http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpg The Further Adventures of Flossie Fillett (2006) |
I'm on and this is fitting my mood well!
|
You need to hook me up with some of this Turquoise, I'm digging it massively :D
|
Os Mutantes, nice, the Sonics better be numero uno.

7) Os Mutantes The darlings of the Tropicalia movement, this two brothers and one Rita Lee trio are still the finest band ever to come out of the southern hemisphere. Hailing from Sao Paulo, their self titled debut in 1968 has become the stuff of legend, combining Brazilian rhythm with Fuzz and Psychedelic components to create one of the most extraordinary sounds ever created by mankind.Essential http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgOs Mutantes (1968) |
^ this... is good.
|
Aye, i've heard of Tropicalia but have never dabbled in it.

6) The Kaleidoscope Labelled by Fontana Records as The Sound of Tomorrow, this no nonsense group from Acton in London, were the epitome of English Psychedelia, with excellent orchestral arrangements, whimsical lyrics, gorgeous harmonies and easily accessible music experimentation. Their debut in 1967 and the follow up in 1969 to this day remain the most underrated English sixties albums from the period.Essentials http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgTangerine Dream (1967) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgFaintly Blowing (1969) |
Only an English band could do a tune about a man called Geoffrey.

5) The Pretty Things Another band from Fontana, a true band for all seasons. Stumbling inebriated into the world from Kent in England’s South East, this filthy R&B group shook Britain to the core when they arrived on the scene in 1965. Not only that but flawlessly reinvented themselves in 1968 creating a landmark piece with the now seminal album S.F. Sorrow, the band The Rolling Stones could have been.Essentials http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgGet The Picture? (1965) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgS.F. Sorrow (1968) |
I am quite partial to the Pretty Things, definitely deserve to be up there.

4) The Timebox Our only Northern England entrant, formed in Southport, Lancashire in 1966. This group were the ultimate Mod act, taking jazz and giving it a flawless pop edge. Signed to the Deram wing of Decca, The Timebox were huge on the club and University circuits in England, they're promise however was shockingly never met by record sales, leaving this group albumless in the 1960's.Essential http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgBeggin' - The Sound of London's Mod/Club Scene (2008) |
Beggin'
|
This is familiar to me for all the wrong reasons, i much prefer this to the song that re-did it not too long ago. This is gorgeous!
|
Blue eyed soul at it's very best Luke.

3) The Uglys Signed to Pye in 1965, this Birmingham act was led by the marvellous Steve Gibbons. In 1965 the world was this band’s oyster with the release of two Disk Jockey favourites, It’s Alright and A Friend, but for a distributors strike at the time, this release would have gone to number one and paved the way for Ugly domination of the UK for the next four years at least, alas history is a cruel beast. Several attempts to revive the band failed in the late sixties, but there is no denying quality.Essential http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgThe Quiet Explosion (2004) |

2) The Sonics If you ever wanted to know what a ton of dynamite would sound like if you lit the fuse and gave it some microphones, guitars, drums and a saxophone, than listen no further. Here it is ladies and gentlemen, 100% unfiltered TNT, all the way from Tacoma, in America's northwest, The Sonics. This band is the ultimate US Garage act and the marker for Rock & Roll with a bit of bite.Essentials http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgHere Are The Sonics (1965) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgBoom (1966) |
The Sonics were inevitable, great stuff. Monks for No.1?
|
Comus won't be a happy boy...he was hoping for The Sonics.

1) The Monks In 1966, a band of ex-American soldiers emerged in Germany with a new album. Black Monk Time by The Monks was the bands only release but what an album, re-evaluating Beat music and creating the most rhythmic and genius albums of the sixties.....and perhaps of anytimeEssential http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...160_AA115_.jpgBlack Monk Time (1966) |
Cheers for all the chatter fellas, hope it was an enjoyable affair and thanks for listening
Good Evening :thumb: |
Make a mixtape of this stuff, seriously. I need to get some of this stuff down my throat!
|

Cheers man...great show. |

for the ones that i haven't heard yet...i will. you definitely know your stuff man, wish i could have heard the show. |
Epic show, I went to play FFXII in the latter half but still had the radio on, I am very much intruigued by Turquoise, The Timebox and the Uglys. Would love some ups, the rest are all more familiar and very deserving :p
