does knowing how to play paradiddles limit your ability to bust out a 4/4 punk beat?

playing with a pick won't hinder your progress but it might limit some phrasing and tonal possibilities. it's hard to get the muted half note before the attack you get by slipping your 2nd finger prior to plucking with your 1st with a pick for example. you'll also have a hard time getting old school soul and r&b tone without using your fingers too.

as for the tracks bassline2 owns the first 1. bummed out that it's so short. i really dug the samples to make the beat and the random guitar

I was thinking more that if I am using a pick I wont be using fingers, therefore not getting any better at that.

Well I made them short because I have been spending time actually making a full album that doesn't have bass throughout. And instead of finding someone else to do it, and having to explain what I want I figured I would just learn how. And they were not samples, just simple drums recorded on audio keyboard. And that other sound is also bass, just sounds like guitar because that's what Im used to playing.

Thanks for reply.

well yeah like anything else it's all about practice. pick style and finger style are like opposite sides of the same coin. one won't hinder the other but won't aid it either.

it's cool that it's just drum and bass on that other track too.

No. do not do this.

As a bass player myself, I strictly recommend finger style exclusively. As panbient... i mean mr. dave said earlier, it offers so many more tonal possibilties.

yeah i used to be fingers exclusive too but then i started playing guitar hero (with a pick). it translates to playing bass with a pick incredibly well and sure beats playing along to a metronome to build up your timing chops.

it's easy to end up in a situation where you're cutting off your nose to spite your face when it comes to fingers vs. pick on the bass.

Guitar Hero??? Pick???? how does that work?

I actually tried that once and it yielded horribe results. Yeah pick can be better for more of a sharp precise feel.

Still, no coins... please.
