Do you think Heart deserves to be in the Rock and Roll HOF??
Based on the contributions from the original Heart line-up which was started in 68, and eventually wound up consisting of Roger Fisher on lead guitar, Steve Fossen on bass, Mike Derosier on drums, Howard Leese on rhythm guitar, Nancy Wilson on guitar and back-up vocals, and Ann Wilson on lead vocals...
|
No. But there are a bunch of other shitty bands that have also been inducted so I guess they set the bar pretty low.
|
You're right, the latest being Metallica... What in your opinion makes Heart ****ty? In all honesty, Ann and Nance are the ones who have kept them around, but they arent really the heart and soul. That sounds pretty contradictive (SP?) but it makes sense to me... Mike is still one of the most talented drummers I know, no bass player has the kind of tone or rhythm that mr. fossen has (see The Cafe Authors for his newer stuff), and my dad has just as much energy, or more, since his departure form the band in '79.

I voted yes based upon the bands that actually do get in. Are they in my personal HOF? No. But they're infinitely better than U2 who is in the actual HOF.

Any band is better than U2.

U2's 80's stuff is fantastic. They should've broken up after that.

I only know Barracuda and Magic Man, but they're pretty good songs. I don't know if they're Hall Of Fame material, though.
|
I dunno, U2 persevered into the 90's and produced some pretty great stuff... Achtung Baby, Zooopa and about half of Pop make for some pretty scintillating listening, in my opinion... pity about all the backwards steps and conversatism of their two most recent new releases... ughh, mostly awful rehashes of their eighties sound with traces of their nineties greatness... all done with less quality than both eras... it feels like a once great band has sunken to a parody... and "get on your Boots' really hasn't helped me to like them better recently...
|
When "Barracuda" is the only song you can remember from a group you've spent some time listening to, you know they're piss. Screw Heart, the Rock & Roll HOF, and the moronic journalists who continue to foster musical ignorance to generations of readers even today.
On U2 for a minute though....the problem with them for me (in my humble opinion) is that their overall sound, whether it was their stadium-rock antics from the 80's (Boy, The Joshua Tree, etc...all crap) or their "We inspired R.E.M so lets try to do college rock better than them" 90's tripe, are simply the kind of group that aren't worth the listening time and analysis people seem to give them. I've heard better, seen better, READ better lyrics after hearing them. So why should I be interested in giving them attention? Because they're popular? Because their music can "touch your emotions"? Big freakin' whoop. EVERY band I listen to on a regular basis have the capacity to reach someone's emotions, and most of them manage to do it in ways so innovatively stark that Bono's little mind would probably explode trying to understand them. That is if he can shut up about children in Africa long enough to get some decent music down his ears anyway. I'll say this though. Considering all the sellouts and ****ty bands who cite them as an influence, I will thank U2 for providing such a conspicuous standard (a foundation even) of what I know is worth my time and what isn't. |
God dammit, this isnt supposed to be a U2 thread.. We all know they will get into the RR HOF, regardless of whether we like them or not....
None of you even like Mistral Wind? I think that is their most underrated song ever.... |

I'll always side with REM in the whole REM vs. U2 debate, mainly because I am a huge REM fan and a casual, critical U2 listener...
But perhaps this topic is overrunning this board... anyone wanna make a REM vs. U2 board, feel free, I'll be one of the first to post on it... |
I don't give a damn about the Rn'R HOF, real Rock n' Roll doesn't need nor desire any sort of ****-stain museum for it.
And **** REM and U2, I'm sick of fish-faced british false-rock bands dominating the hipster empire of the modern day world. |
REM are from Athens, Georgia, I believe, so their british - ness is debatable on those grounds alone... But I get your point anyways...
Getting back to the topic at hand... Yes, I believe Heart should be inducted in the hall of fame... they have made significant contributions to the rock canon, especially in terms of bringing in a female perspective to what can be sometimes an overtly male influenced genre... |

Georgia. . . King George, yep british enough for me. |
Well, given that REM's main fanbase has pretty much shifted to Europe and Britain, I'll concede...
And maybe just maybe I'll find something by the bands you mentioned, and give them a fair listen... I'm not really a Heart fan per se, just to clarify... I just think that if they are nominated and they get in, its not by any means a bad thing. |
If were going to hand out awards for being a rock band in the 70s and going on to make turgid soft rock ballads in the 80s someone better give Robin Zander & Greg Giuffria a call.
|
I know i have a thing for female-fronted bands but Heart are absolutely bloody terrible.
|
No, But still a great band.
|
Just to ask an off topic question, is there actually a physical hall of fame with these artists names in it? I know this might sound like a dumb question, and ya know, it probably is, but I always wondered...
.... and maybe, just maybe i require more sleep... |
|
No.
To be in the hall of fame you have to be legends. If you went up to some random person (sadly), they prolly have never heard of heart. They are really good don't get me wrong, just not HoF worthy. |
I dunno, i think they're well known enough, considering that half the kids in the school I work in don't even know how who Nirvana are... most people who have played guitar hero at least a few times probably know who heart is, given that Barracuda is on that game...
|
Yes for me. I think Heart really did a horrible transformation into the 80s, but a lot of their 70s stuff kicks ass. Barracuda is, of course, a classic. For me - so is magic man, straight on, dog & butterfly, crazy on you and many more songs.
I like Mistral Wind too. Although there are not that many contenders for the throne, 70s Heart is my favourite female fronted rock/hard rock band. Also, rock should have more female guitar players. edit : My thoughts on U2 is that, although I haven't heard much of their post 2000-stuff, they suffer much more from being too popular and not cool to like than they do from lack of musical ability. ;) |

I was kinda suprised it was in Ohio - seems like an odd place with very little to do with the actual genesis of rock music... indeed, menfist would be more appropriate!

But I respect them circa WAR and Achtung Baby. They were truly inspired then. And yes, for being the most prominent female classic rock group of their generation, Heart deserves to be in the hall of fame. ****, BARRACUDA! |
Heart deserves much better.
|
yes if they influced people..
|
Never heard of it.
