Well yes this is true, but Nicks & Buckingham were sort of the core of the band during their years of success.

I forgot to add Lynyrd Skynyrd into the mix though they and the Eagles are a bit too country for me. Early Van Halen of course & ZZ Top as well.

They put out a great album and it was kind of a cross between Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Velvet Underground and the Byrds amongst others, but with just one studio album I hardly qualify them to the 'best classic American rock band'

That one album is one of my all time favourite rock albums, and one of my overall favourites so it's qualification enough for me.

They were successful prior to Nicks/Buckingham, in the UK at least. There's a hardcore of Mac fans that much prefer the Peter Green years, myself included.

I would give that to Aerosmith concerning classic rock. Journey and Boston are two other bands worth mention.

Good god, did you hit the nail on the head. Lynyrd Skynyrd. ( pre-crash Skynyrd) Allman Brothers a close second.

If it is strictly 60's, I'm gonna push it and say Alice Cooper and Jethro Tull. They released stuff at the very end of the 60s.

If it included solo artists as well, Elvis Presley, no contest.

I love the Beach Boys, but are they truly rock?

The Doors are probably my favourite.
