I woudnt say influence is overrated at all. If there's a really influential band and you don't like them, then **** it, don't listen to them. Just because a band is influential doesn't mean they make good music, but what is "good" is completely subjective. Influence is One of the few things in music that isn't subjective. And because of that, an influential band just kind of deserves a little respect, if you like them or not, because their effect on music is undeniable.

Would you same about popularity, that isn't subjective either ?
I somehow doubt it.

Influence is more or less the same thing as popularity just in a different manifestation. It just means you're popular with people who play music rather than with people who buy music.

Popularity isn't subjective, but is it as important as being influential? No. Take jimi Hendrix, for example, is the fact that he had such a huge influence on so many great guitarists overrated? I would say hell no. To have such a huge Affect on so many great musicians is not overrated at all. It's quite an accomplishment. A lot more so than it is to make music that some people think is good.

If I listen to Jimi Hendrix it's because I like his songs. I couldn't care less how many people he inspired to pick up a guitar. Just as much as me not caring how many albums Madonna has sold to influence me to ever listen to her.

It may not be why I'll listen to an artist again and again, but the reason I check some people out in the first place is because they influenced some band I like.

I totally agree with you. I didn't say being influential had no merits.
It might make me want to take a look at something but has no bearing on whether I like it or not. But then I could say the exact same things about a lot of other things, even popularity to some extent.

If he was a **** guitarist and put on a pedestal then yes, I'd say he's overrated. The huge influence on everybody else would just make him more overrated.

Exactly. I like getting to the roots, hearing who An artists influences were. But in the end, the reason you listen to an artist is because you like their music.

Originality trumps influence every time, as I'm aware everybody already knows.

I hold all statistics, influence, criticisms, race and what have you. As being a completely different subject when it comes to the music itself. I'm bias that way..

I think that most everybody could be subconsciously influenced by artist they might not even be aware of? Whatever the thought is worth.

You don't think there's a connection between originality and influence? I'd say there is, historically speaking.
