(Adult Contemporary) They are among some of the best selling artist of all-time. They had a jazz trio thing going with Wes Jacob in '65. Their music may have very well been influenced by jazz for obvious reasons, if that's what you mean by jazz-based.

Triumph is a fav of mine also. I remember having a discussion with you before concerning who was the best band between Free & Bad Company. Bad Company were really big here (in the northeastern states anyway). Were they very popular in the UK? compared to Free.

i mean, most of their songs use jazz chords, has jazz theory and are jazz progressions

only they change it to make it "pop"

So..oo.. their music is basically influenced by jazz. Steely Dan, is very jazz influenced in the same way. (jazz rock)

yeah, they somehow make it sound less "jazzy" and more mainstream, but any Carpenters song is pretty hard to learn, there're at least six chords in one line in a verse

I'm glad you pointed the jazz aspect of their music out to me. I know that Richard Carpenter is a well esteemed songwriter and producer by various opinions. if you define jazz based on its improvisational, dynamic and harmonic character, then you can say that is what their music is partly based on, (as you stated before).

Free never reached the heights of popularity that the big three (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) did here in the UK. In terms of popularity they were the next level down along with the likes of Humble Pie.

Bad Company were a much bigger selling band here in the 70`s than Free ever were, but I think today more people will have far more nostalgia for Free than they would for Bad Company.

I don't know if that applies in the states or not. Of course "All Right Now" by Free has always been popular here, but that's about it, as far as Free is concerned with mainstream. Bad Company's Ready For Love, Bad Company-Bad Company, Movin'On, The Sky Is Burning, and the list just goes on, is always being played on the classic rock stations here.

All Right Now is the probably the worst thing to happen to them, as this is the only song that people seem to remember by them.
