"Most influential"? Would have to be the Beatles. The number of great songs they wrote has got to win them that distinction. You don't hear Velvet Underground Muzak in elevators.

I agree rock evolved from blues and many had their hands in it.

I think Chuck Berry needs to be placed in the front of the line though.

the beatles will always be on top the have a vast track list that you can find some many song that have influenced other genres

The Beatles weren't really groundbreaking in any genre. They weren't the first in bubblegum pop, they weren't the first in folk rock, they weren't the first in psychedelic rock. What exactly did they do to earn them the reputation of a huge influence?

The innovation that they brought to many genres. They practically invented the concept album with SPLHCB. The White Album is a collection of genres that they attempted from surf rock (Back In The U.S.S.R.) to proto-metal (Helter Skelter) to dance hall (Honey Pie) to experimental (Revolution 9). Its not about who started it, its about who changed it.
