Paul might be a slightly better composer in a purely musical, technical way but John is certainly the better artist

"Night had now fallen on ancient Krikkit... a small group of people... were walking home across the hill towards the town... actually singing a song about how terribly nice everything was... Arthur could almost imagine Paul McCartney sitting with his feet up by the fire one evening, humming it to Linda and wondering what to buy with the proceeds, and thinking probably Essex...
Arthur saw that a couple of members of the party were now singing a different song. It came lilting back to them through the soft night air, and was a sweet romantic ballad that would have netted McCartney Kent and Sussex and enabled him to put in a fair offer for Hampshire "The middle eight bridge, which would have had McCartney consolidated in Winchester and gazing intently over the Test Valley to the rich pickings of the New Forest beyond, had some curious lyrics." "From somewhere at the back of the crowd a single voice started to sing a tune which would have enabled Paul McCartney, had he written it, to buy the world." This is excellent. The Beatles recorded this album in bits and pieces, while these musicians do it all in one session and remain as true the original instruments as possible. That's quite a feat.

So, I've been listening to the Beatles lately, and it seems to me Abbey road is by far the best thing they've ever done.
But what I wanted to know is, what's up with the heaps of praise for The White Album? In its 1.5h, I can find maybe 2 songs which stand out (Obla-di and While my guitar gently weeps) but even those are not close to the top of their songwriting. Why is this album considered one of the best of the era? Is it about the lyrics?
