Cream's original name?
Was Cream known originally as "The" Cream? If so, for how long? I've heard this in relation to the fact that Eric and Co. were THE cream of the English music scene. Thanks in advance.

Yes, and you are right on with the origin of the name. They were the original super band so to speak. They never really changed their name either to my knowledge, people just sort of dropped "the".

3J, thanks for the quick answer.

If you like Cream, and are not a spammer, and have not already you should check out Blind Faith's self titled double album. It features, Clapton, Ginger Baker and Stevie Winwood.

Or the Groundhogs who always seem to get forgotten about.

I was speaking more in the lines of Super bands, but that's a great suggestion any blues-rock fan.

Quoting Clapton's autobio: "Our next step was to think of a name for the band, and I came up with Cream, for the very simple reason that in all our minds we were the Cream of the crop, the elite in our respective domains."
But I do recall reading at some point the mention (think it was wikipedia) of the band being call "The Cream"... but I'd rather go with Clapton's version on that, even if he can say whatever he wants since it's his book. |
JayJamJah: Good advice, but those weren't the only great supergroups Clapton was in. Remember Derek and the Dominoes? Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is often considered the zenith of Clapton's career. Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, and Skydog himself (Duane Allman) fronted the band. Their lonely record is probably my favorite blues album and one of the greatest. I...still have the original LP.

Derek and the D's and Blind Faith were always near the front of our vinyl stack. Having 3 older brothers always helped keep me way out in front of the music scene among my peers.
