Reissues of the red (1962-1966) and blue (1967-1970) albums are coming out next week. Is anyone else picking them up? Are there any key songs that you feel were unfortunately omitted from these?
I grew up on the red album so I'm using that as an excuse to pick them up. It seems a bit tedious I suppose since it still feels like their their full studio albums got reissued recently (a year ago). But if I were talking to someone just getting into the band, I'd tell that person to pick both of these up over One for sure. Definitely should have included I Saw Her Standing There, Rain, Tomorrow Never Knows, Taxman...overall, too much Rubber Soul in red, not enough Revolver. I don't really have a problem with blue's track listing...except maybe the inclusion of Helter Skelter and Dear Prudence. |

Rubber Soul.
It's pretty much them at the peak of their two styles - there's the happy-go-lucky pop-rock in 'Drive My Car' and 'In My Life', but songs such as 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)' paved the way for their more out-there sound. Would put Sgt. Pepper's 2nd, Revolver 3rd, Abbey Road 4th and Please, Please Me 5th. |

Has to be Abbey Road, but a close second with Rubber Soul.
As an album, I like Abbey Road better. I love the collaboration between the songs. But as a collection of individual songs, I like Rubber Soul better. In My Life has to be my favorite Beatles song. |

Rubber Soul did not just only pave the way, but it set some high standards, and it includes more songs that can be covered by bands anywhere without fail while most of the magic on Revolver is more studio based - In my opinion (although I also stand by Revolver as their best) it's a solid choice. It was possibly the first album to play classic after classic from start to finish (OK, you can skip "What Goes On"...but even that has a charm), and it had a great style with the rockers like "The Word," George's "Think For Yourself," and "Drive My Car" keeping the energy stay at a strong level of cool. The real start of serious stand-alone albums.

It really surprised me that no one voted for With the Beatles. Nobody. I mean, that's an awesome album. Maybe not their best, but better than some that got some votes up there. I don't get it.
