Syd Barrett (Solo)

After his work with Pink Floyd, he released two studio albums three if you count Opel.

Some tracks are astounding, but a few are just signs of his implosion.

What does everyone think of his solo career?

Pilzkopf 07-06-2007 03:34 PM

Being one who likes "outsider music", I liked Syd's output.

His solo career is a bit like Eminem's. For every Lose Yourself there's a song that talks about smackin' girls behind's, or annoyingly bitching about his mom.

Music Man 07-27-2007 01:11 AM

Syd solo was mediocre. His brain was fried on acid, so his solo work just never amounted to anything truly relevant.

We owe him a debt of gratitude for "Piper at the Gates...", but everything he did after that was pretty much a flash in the pan, IMHO.

GravitySlips 07-27-2007 03:55 AM

Syd solo is good, and of course Pink Floyd with Syd was so much better than they were without him.

Not even close.

GravitySlips 07-27-2007 04:45 AM

Sorry boo boo, they were mediocre at best without him.

Piper is easily their best album.

^Opinions, opinions. :p:

joyboyo53 07-27-2007 07:13 AM

^ what he said.

although it may have been COMPARABLE lyrically to post syd barrett floyd albums, the composition and sound of work done without him was much better.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-27-2007 10:15 AM

I'd say his solo stuff was interesting rather than good.

I think Barrett album is much better than The Madcap Laughs , probably because it's more organised & focused. Although I think most of that is due to Dave Gilmour being involved in the production which made it much more listenable than it's predecessor.

The Unfan 07-27-2007 10:36 AM

I prefer The Madcap Laughs because of its sporadic nature. The lack of flow gives it a weirdly honest sound. Songs like Octopus and If It's In You sound genuinely experimental even if they don't stray too far from typical Syd. Also, No Man's Land is just too good.

You hipsters really do get a kick out of being wrong all the time.

Barrets solo material is almost completely unlistenable, just listen to how horribly out of sync Barretts singing and guitar playing is with the rest of the instrumentation to see what I mean.

When the only redeeming qualities about his second album is the guitar playing and production from the very guy who f*cking replaced him in Pink Floyd then you know something is wrong.

Gilmour era Floyd > Barrett.

Fact.

Yeah those hip young scene kids really dig 40 year old folk albums. I see loads of teenagers with trendy haircuts rocking out to Baby Lemonade on a regular basis.

That really wasn't called for.

MHDTV 07-28-2007 12:24 PM

Wow...You act like he deeply wounded you or something.

GravitySlips 07-28-2007 04:54 PM

I'm sorry it comes across that way.

MHDTV 07-28-2007 05:56 PM

No problem.

.MP3 07-29-2007 12:19 PM

I agree with boo boo. Barrett era isnt even close to as good as Gilmour and Waters era.

boo boo 07-30-2007 07:35 AM

Bike is probably the worst song Pink Floyd have ever done.

If you ignore every song off Atom Heart Mother

reggaeuplifts 07-30-2007 03:03 PM

I didn't even know he had additional albums. I thought he had gone crazy after Piper.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-30-2007 03:09 PM

He did , Thats what makes them so interesting

Syd Barrett Defined.

MHDTV 08-03-2007 11:40 PM

Explain yourself young man!

sweet_nothing 06-15-2008 06:07 AM

yeh this is a bump

I have just been recently revisting early Floyd which sparked a interest in their former maverick frontman Syd Barrett, he was a brillant songwriter even if he was a bit mad. I just got his first solo album which i think is just great better than piper, imo. With songs showing his playfulness such as love you, and i song which i find rather heartbreaking dark globe with Syd singing 'wouldnt you miss me at all?', which i believe is about his former bandmates so easily moving on with out him. But i find Syd to be a very interesting songwriter which are probably due to his drug use.
