The Who

i love the who.

they were my first band and remain my favourite.

i got into the Who and Frank Zappa at the same time and they are both my favourite artists/bands.

i dont have a favourite album because they are all so good, heres what i think of some of their albums.:

My Generation: Epitomises the early who. Moons drumming on this is amazing as is the scope of Daltreys singing from La La La Lies to Out in the Street and the B-side Bald Headed Woman. This was the first ever punk album.

Sell Out: a true masterpeice. sooo under-rated its not funny. Why half the songs on this album werent number one hits I dont know. Great songs, all which have meaning and tell stories and most of the bonus tracks on the CD should have been released on a different album cause they are genius

Tommy: Beautiful. The scope of Townshends songwriting is amazing. from soft pop, to orchestral like inspirational music to hard rock. This album has got it all.

Who's Next: Perfection. When i wake up and im tired, i listen to this and it wakes me up and opens my mind. So many great songs, Baba, Bargain, Love aint for keeping, My Wife, The Song is over Going Mobile, Getting In Tune, Behind Blue Eyes, Wont Get Fooled Again thats practically the whole album but it is so good. also Naked Eye and Water are great

Quadrophenia: This album is great. Probably my favourite rock opera, i really connected with this. this is one of the few albums that really has a place in my heart. it is a brilliant album.

The Who By Numbers: This album is often dismissed as being a suicide note and rubbish and all thatt but really its quite good. It has real poetry in it and really makes you think.

so, anybody else like the Who?

boo boo 08-26-2005 06:36 AM

67 :)

boris jawaka 08-30-2005 04:47 PM

i can see for miles is great.

the harmonies in it are really complicated

Quadrophenia 08-31-2005 05:11 PM

Maybe the best rock band of all time. I'm glad to see a thread here about them. I had to make one in another forum I go to. Imagine that.

I can see for miles was considered a flop when it came out. It`s failure in the charts came as a dissapointment for Townsend because at the time he considered it the best song he`d ever written.Which spawned his famous ' I spit on the British record buying public' comment.

boris jawaka 08-31-2005 08:02 PM

yeah - i dont know how it could have been a flop, its so damn good!

i love the who sell out, on which i can see for miles appears - at that time, townshend was writing some great songs e.g. " 'miles" and "mary anne with the shaky hand" and "our love was" etc. and so was entwistle with "silas stingy"and "someones coming"

musically, the who sell out is very linked to tommy, the middle chord progression in "Rael" became the basis of "its a boy", "sparks", "underture" and appears in many other songs on tommy.

MusicMaster 08-31-2005 08:20 PM

Hmmm, I think they're pretty over rated in my opinion. I mean don't get me wrong, they're great and I love them. But people that I call "posers" say they like The Who, just so they can fit in with other kids in my school. It's just another one of those radio hit bands to me. But I do like Pinball Wizard(with Elton John) and Teenage Wasteland.

anticipation 08-31-2005 08:23 PM

i recently got the Live At The Isle Of Wight dvd and it was awesome.

boris jawaka 08-31-2005 09:47 PM

the song called Teenage Wasteland is actually called Baba O'riley after Pete's avater, Meher Baba and American minimalist composer, Terry Riley - still its a great song.

the Who songs you hear on the radio are just the hits, to really appreciate the Who, you have to listen carefully to some of their albums, particularly Tommy, Who's Next and Quadrophenia

the_spinning_never_stops 09-01-2005 10:28 AM

i started listening to the who a couple months ago bc i found my dad's my generation cd. My favorite songs are pinball wizard, join together, i can see for miles, i can't explain, and baba o'riley of course.

boris jawaka 09-01-2005 04:54 PM

there all great!

PhishFood 09-01-2005 08:51 PM

You cannot gain a full understanding of a band based solely on radio hits. especially a band like the who.

boris jawaka 09-01-2005 09:19 PM

absolutely

thehelp 07-20-2006 03:09 AM

When? What?

The Who? Who are you talking about?

Ain't like Zeppelin!

Kindred 07-20-2006 03:39 AM

boo boo 07-20-2006 06:15 AM

ZeppelinAir 07-20-2006 11:47 PM

i agree with boo boo, cant we all get along, both of the bands are great, my favorite song from The Who is Pinball Wizard, one of my fav. of all time at that

bruise_violet 07-21-2006 06:43 AM

Love Ain't For Keeping is lovely.

jellybean 07-21-2006 02:05 PM

The Who is a pretty cool band. I'm not into them as much as The Rolling Stones. But I definitely like them. I think one song that got me into them was "Who Are You." I heard this song on the radio many times, but I didn't know that The Who did it for quite sometime. When my parents told me they did this song, I grew to like them more. What do you guys think of this song?

DearJenny 07-29-2006 09:26 AM

Tommy is a masterpiece.

The movie was great as well, I thought they presented it well.

Urban Hat€monger ? 07-29-2006 12:20 PM

The Who Sell Out >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tommy , Who`s Next , Quadrophenia

boo boo 07-29-2006 11:12 PM

Who's Next > Tommy > Who Sell Out > Quadrophena. :)

hiu 07-30-2006 12:27 AM

The Who By Numbers > All

boo boo 07-30-2006 12:32 AM

Thats one of my least favorite Who albums. :-/

analogdemon 07-30-2006 07:44 AM

What do people think about Townshend and Daltry putting out a new Who album next month? I personally have no problem with it, and I'll probably buy it. That said, I've heard a lot of diehards who are crying heresy. Anyone have thoughts?

DearJenny 07-30-2006 09:27 AM

^What!? That is bull****. That band is NOTHING without Moon and Entwhistle IMO. They are touring this fall and I would love to go, but the tickets are simply too much to see only half the band.

MHDTV 06-27-2007 08:29 PM

The Official Who Thread

:band:

Vocals: Roger Daltrey
Impeccably on key, great quality and range for a rock singer.
Occasionaly sounds overly breathy, and this isn't really him, but the backup singers can get annoying.

Guitar: Pete Townshend
An excellent guitarist who really shines at live shows, but fails to bring anything unique to the table in studio recordings. Undoubtably one of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Keith Moon:
One of the greatest rock drummers of all time, played a very tight, yet loose feeling, style.

John Entwhistle:
Probably the weakest member of the band, occasional songwriting contributions, solid, but certainly not spectacular bass playing.

In short, one of the greatest bands of all time.

MHDTV 06-27-2007 10:19 PM

Oh yah, my favorites are Quadrophenia>Who's Next>Tommy.

Lost_At_22 06-28-2007 02:11 AM

>_<

He's the most talented musician in the whole damn band.

I'd also say that Townshend has done a lot of notable guitar work in studio, notably on Quadrophena.
