They ain't underrated in my opinion, they were fanatstic and are widely recognised as such. But I suppose anything can be considered underrated if one's opinion of something is loftier than most.

It took the Who nearly five years to find their American audience. Their first three albums made it to the lower reaches of the Billboard charts. The Who Sings My Generation peaked at #74, A Quick One (aka Happy Jack) peaked at #67 and The Who Sell Out peaked at #48.
Only with Tommy in 1969 did the Who achieve chart success, but it took 8 months for Tommy to finally rise it's peak position #4 on the Billboard chart in the spring of 1970. I saw the Who twice before the release of Tommy in 1969 and in both cases the venues were only about half full. But after the success of Tommy, every show the Who ever played in the United States was sold out. Granted; the Who were under appreciated for the first five years of their existence but after 1970, they became one of the most popular touring bands in the history of the United States.

What about Tommy? I've been listening to Tommy for over 40 years and I've never gotten sick of it.
