I remember in high school, my current best friend and I argued over the artistic merits of The Who vs. Queen.
Ultimately, I wound up winning, but I'll have to say that having listened to every album and live recording of Queen available and also The Who, I think they're almost even. Granted, Queen's Live Aid performance was ultimately superior, but The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" was damn near orgasmic.

Just a few thoughts I'm having listening to Tommy...
The Who have probably the second best vocal harmonies of any rock band behind The Beatles. Entwistle doesn't seem to get much work here, which is pretty annoying for people who love his playing. How many people can write a song about a pedophile so well and so funnily? Townshend is simply brilliant.

Fair point, but the Beach Boys weren't really 'rock'. Nonetheless their harmonies are excellent and they are somewhat better than The Who's.

Hi. First post
I would have to say that in regards to vocal harmonies, The Zombies deserve a special mention too. The Who are my favourite band. My favourite albums would have to be Sell Out, Tommy and Who's Next. One album that has not been mentioned too much in this thread is Who are you. Not their greatest album, but a good return to form after the somewhat mediocre By Numbers. It also features my favourite Entwistle composition - Trick of the Light. For people who are just getting into The Who, I do also recommend a compilation. The Who started off as a singles band and some of their best songs are not on the albums (Substitute, I'm a Boy, The Seeker etc). |
