I'm not sure what his name is. But here's a video of the show I saw last night.
Moonlight Drive - YouTube No way. They were not overrated. Ray, Robby and John were all great musicians. I admit, Jim gets too much credit, (but there aren't many rock frontmen that don't get too much credit) and his lyrics weren't that good. The other members get overshadowed by Jim, and it's wrong, but a true Doors fan appreciates the band as much, if not more than Jim. But I don't think Jims lyrics were that bad. I think he was a great singer with a powerful voice. Like Rip Taylor says in Waynes World, "He (Jim) appears to be a crooner in a rock band." I think that's a fairly accurate description. The band was highly unique and creative. Last edited by blastingas10; 11-17-2011 at 07:51 PM. |

I've been a fan of the Doors since I first heard them on AM radio, back in 1967. (When AM radio was the place to hear the best rock music.)
I still listen to them after all these years and I still love 'em! I've always loved Jim Morrison's vocals, although his some of his stage antics always seemed a bit juvenile to me, and I find his poetry to range from good to bad. (Although it all seems to make sense under the influence of psychedelic enhancements.) Robby Krieger gets recognized for his guitar playing, but he never seems to get enough recognition for his songwriting with the band. I always thought John Densmore was an interesting drummer, and Ray Manzarek has one of the most recognizable keyboard playing techniques in music. I just saw Ray & Robby on their recent tour and they still sound great! Dave Brock did a fine job on vocals and the drumming of Ty Dennis and bass playing from Phil Chen rounded out the rhythm section quite impressively. I'm still hoping John Densmore will get back behind the drum kit with Ray & Robby someday, (soon, I hope!) and tour with them again. |

I can see things from both sides here. I dont think Jim was ever a "wannabe Dylan". But there's no doubt that Jim wasn't half as good as Dylan. And Jim had a great voice. But I couldn't disagree more with the statement about Dylan. It seems to be a popular idea that Dylan's songs were better when sung by other people. I don't think so at all. They are his songs and nobody can put the emotion in them like Dylan can. I also think that Dylan had a great voice. Last edited by blastingas10; 11-19-2011 at 01:54 PM. |
