Ok well David Lee Roth did infact get back with the band in 08. Im sure you all know about the tour he did with them.
So, Things i'd like to discuss: Was the break up of the original band because of Eddie or David? What do you think of Michael Anthony? I personally think it was david being an attention hog. And i think Michael Anthony isnt that much of an addition to the band...

Best Van Hagar Album OU812
Best Van Roth Album VH1 Lets not even talk about the other one lol. Eddie was the star of the band. Legendary guitar player who had a major impact on the future sound of Rock & Roll. The rest of the band was good but none shined like Eddie.

A band with two distinct sides that seems to split their fans:
The David Lee Roth era was sexy Van Halen and a precursor for the dreaded hair metal brigade but they were glamourous and great to watch. Their first album is a great debut and an album I really like with the classic "Ain`t Talking bout Love" and an essential album to any hard rock/metal collection, as is the second album. The rest of the albums are patchy though, before they gradually steered into a very pop orientated sound and really had some poor albums post their debut album, even though I do like their cover of "Pretty Woman". The final album "1984" is without doubt their best since their debut and I think their use of synthesizers here, to be a success compared to other bands of their ilk. The Hagar era sees Van Halen to be more consistent initially and both "5150" and "OU812" are very tight albums and really concrete the Hagar period and they are albums I enjoy. The next couple of albums "F.U.C.K"and "Balance" I remember to be more back to basics and the former came out at the time of grunge and seem to incoporate some elements of grunge. The last album with Gary Cherone on vocals was bloody awful. Last edited by Unknown Soldier; 07-29-2013 at 09:49 AM. |

This band has never been about the singer, to me. David Lee Roth annoys me. Sammy Hagar annoys me. Eddie tears it up.
Are their albums actually worth getting into? I have Greatest Hits vol. 1 and that has been more than enough Van Halen for me.

IMHO 1984 is a near perfect album and their self-titled is also very solid. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea (and not a style that is generally my cup of tea either), but I find both albums incredibly fun and think they'd be worth checking out.

I honestly like Sammy Hagar, sure he has the dumbest lyrics ever, but I think he's a great singer and his Van Halen stuff gets too much flack, it's so completely different from the David Lee Roth stuff that I hardly consider it the same band and thus hardly worthy of comparison.
His stuff with Montrose is pretty kickass, it's just good ol' fashioned c0ck rock. Also, don't tell me this song isn't f*cking awesome. |
