tdoc210 05-12-2006 02:44 PM

Fenixpunk 05-12-2006 03:01 PM

they played at the bike rally here not too long ago, i was disapointed that i missed it, but wasnt to keen on hanging out at a biker bar, in a biker town, during a bike rally, without a bike.

Merkaba 05-12-2006 04:52 PM

Pretty good band. I have one of their compilation cd's and it's all good right he way through. Don't Fear the Reaper is a neat song.

Pretty underrated band by the look of things.

boo boo 05-12-2006 11:27 PM

Did you check out Workshop Of The Telescopes?

TheBig3 05-13-2006 02:23 PM

You know I was going to ask you guys, what the hell is BOC considered? Are they a fine line between prog and glam? Do they have blues based stuff, I've only heard a handfull of things but they seem to be devoid of vocal passion...and any sort of music tenacity as well...

Who are these guys?

p.s. The Astronomy cover by metallica blew my ****ing mind.

boo boo 05-13-2006 02:32 PM

I wouldn't consider them prog though they did have some proggy material, i certainly wouldn't consider them glam though i can hear a little Bowie influence in some of their work... I'd say overall they were just a rock n roll band, plain and simple.... Some however would go as far as to call them metal or proto metal, and i see that as a possibility.... Their influence on a lot of metal bands is pretty overlooked.

A lot of people label them AOR or Album Oriented Rock... Which is also what Journey, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon are considered to be... Which is a big insult to BoC.

I don't consider them AOR though, AOR bands aren't badass enough to have Patti Smith write songs for them.

TheBig3 05-13-2006 03:09 PM

I don't care for albums, but whats wrong with an AOB?

boo boo 05-13-2006 03:29 PM

AOR you mean?

AOR more or less is a term to discribe most classic rock radio bands.

While there are good bands that are considered to be (AOR), BOC, Heart and Boston for example... More or less people associate it with the likes of Journey, Foreigner, Survivor and every other crappy band that has had a song featured in one of the Rocky movies.

TheBig3 05-13-2006 04:41 PM

James Brown?

boo boo 05-13-2006 05:34 PM

Excluding the godfather of soul.

shiftael 05-13-2006 05:47 PM

how about just plain Rock Music?

boo boo 05-13-2006 06:15 PM

That'll do.

BeamMeUpScotty 05-15-2006 11:27 AM

I'm kinda shocked people haven't flooded this thread with tired jokes about wanting more cowbell.

shiftael 05-15-2006 06:58 PM

it was sora controverisal in teh 80's too I can't remembr if it was the band themselvs or soemeon else taht said it represented questioning of all things relgion, it aws a question mark pointed down meaning to question everything. to the best of my recollection, that is..
but then again back in the 80's practially anything remotely anti-religious came under attack.. Not that it doesn't today.. ;)

tdoc210 05-15-2006 07:05 PM

ZeppelinAir 07-25-2006 12:23 AM

They are considered Psychedelic Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, they probly are my favorite group right now, and i have to say that their first album Blue Oyster Cult, is their best

Mr Sensitive 07-26-2006 03:37 PM

They are probably the best band I have seen live.

tdoc210 07-26-2006 03:40 PM

I like them a bit.

QueenNothing 01-31-2007 10:14 AM

The Unfan 01-31-2007 11:49 AM

One of my favorite bands ever. Very solid and diverse rock band.

almauro 01-31-2007 06:12 PM

SECRET TREATIES is one of rock music's greatest achievements. The remastering is spectacular, lending this recording great depth and texture. What's really killer is when Dharma, Bloom and Lanier line up the guitars and play triple leads left, center and right, creating a layered effect, pushing the framework of modern rock music to boundries its never been to, since. If that's not enough, you've got the tightest rhythm section ever recorded...and keyboards! Secret Treaties is one of the most creative and entertaining progressive rock recording, easily comparable to Ziggy Stardust, Who's Next, Machine Head, etc. Treaties starts strong, and never lets up, songs flowing seamlessly into each other, creating a unified suite of songs, the last time BOC produced such an "Album Oriented Rock" record, abandonning this approach for uneven albums, and steller singles the rest of their career. Sensing the inevitable ending during the resonating piano of "Flamming Telepaths" and "Astronomy", I hoped this experience would last another 40 minutes. Instead, when done, I immediately played the cd again...with headphone. Needless to say, this is on my heavy rotation...as well as their debut and Tyranny and Mutation.

Party Guy

Captain Ron 06-27-2011 08:09 PM

i love their first album

Unknown Soldier 08-22-2011 04:23 AM

BOC really don`t get that much of a mention on these threads which is a shame given just how great that band was in the 1970s. They emerged as an American answer to Black Sabbath, but in reality their sound was quite different and their early following largely came from bikers who quickly identified with the band and their unique mix of hard rock and heavy metal. At times their sound was often dense and complex, something though that could`ve done with better production or remastering on those early albums. IMO this band take a lot of listens to really appreciate their sound and their first three studio albums Blue Oyster Cult, Tyranny and Mutation and Secret Treaties and the live On Your Feet Or On Your Knees are absolute hard rock classics.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 08-29-2011 05:16 AM

Hit and miss but astounding at their best:

Psy-Fi 08-29-2011 09:24 PM

Their first four albums are amongst the great hard rock albums of all time, in my opinion.
And their late 70's laser light show was one of the best light shows of that time and any since!
And don't forget their earlier recordings as 'The Stalk Forrest Group'
Great stuff!
