More cowbell...?

Is that going to be the last thought when it comes to Blue Oyster Cult? Or the first thought? I hope not.

Although their biggest three are Don't Fear the Reaper, Burnin' for You, and Godzilla, they have so many far better songs than just them.

Flaming Telepaths being my favorite by them.

Cities on Flame with Rock n Roll'
This Ain't the Summer of Love
Career of Evil
Transmaniacon MC
Goin' Through the Motions
Before the Kiss, a Redcap
Stairway to the Stars
Buck's Boogie
E.T.I. (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)
Workshop of the Telescopes
The Red and the Black
7 Screaming Diz-Busters
Subhuman

All of those are better songs than the main three that most come up with, listed above.

I had the pleasure of seeing B.O.C. along with Kiss and the band was awesome! I believe it was about the time that Kiss had their Destroyer album out and the Cult put on a stunning opening show! I have collected numerous albums from them and have enjoyed their mi music over the years.

dont fear the reaper - CLASSIC!

Black Francis 08-20-2013 06:03 PM

You mean this band as other songs other then don't fear the reaper?

This is news to me.

I've always thought Burnin For You has one of the best guitar solo's I've ever heard as far as tone and technique, it's just simplistic with an underlying brutality. Buck is commonly underrated in most circles, but not mine. Here's one of my all-time favorites that will more than likely remain off the radar for most, not for the guitar solo's but for the sheer beauty and brilliance that is Blue Oyster Cult:

Personally I always thought he was one of the best guitarists to ever grace the rock arena. When I was re-listening to a lot of BOC stuff for my journal, I was even more amazed at just how great he was and he always looked damn good in that white suit.

Indeed! I've tried learning quite a few obscure BoC tunes over the years and a lot of it is fairly complex. Not in the chord structuring but in the nuances of his articulation. Have you checked out Bucks' solo stuff?

I didn't even know that he'd done a solo album or if I did I'd forgotten. As for his guitar work that you talk about above, I'll take your word for it as I hardly know one end of a guitar from another. But your explanation of 'nuances of articulation' is something that I can definitely pick up when listening to BOC.

A fairly simple and good example of this would be the opening/main riff on Don't Fear the Reaper. As a modified A chord it's simple but his articulation on the G string while walking the E and A strings is simple and effective.

Am I immature because that made me chuckle inside, and throw up just a little?

neardeathexperience 05-24-2014 07:57 PM

I don't think I did - but let me check... :yikes:

Well Blue Oyster Cult could slip through the cracks just as easily as Spirit or Foghat for that matter would. A couple of hits on those top 500 count downs and then off into the I've never heard of them bind for the casual music listener.........

Re-Imaginos from Bouchard is out. Not sure what to make of it yet but in my search for info, I happened across this:

It's strange to hear "The Siege..." without those beautiful ivorys kicking in and Joe Satriani's guitar offering:

A song from their new album 'The Symbol Remains'...

Blue Öyster Cult - Florida Man

I don't see myself buying a copy of the album but it's good to hear the old B.O.C. humor still intact and flourishing.

Well, this one slipped under my radar. I haven't listened to Curse of the Hidden Mirror yet, but Heaven Forbid gets a lot of play from me. Real World and a few others off of that one are pure BOC goodness. I'll be giving this one a spin. Thanks for the heads up!

Florida Man sounds like some golden-era Ween. Really like it.

I was never really fond of that tune, even more so when we played it in a band I was in. The crowds loved it though and the rest of the band always seemed to have a lot of fun with it. Our other guitar player had the Japanese part down pretty good:

Rinji news o moshiagemasu!
Rinji news o moshiagemasu!
Gojira ga Ginza hoomen e mukatte imasu!
Daishikyu hinan shite kudasai!
Daishikyu hinan shite kudasai!

Translated to English:

Attention, emergency news!
Attention, emergency news!
Godzilla is going toward the Ginza area!
Immediately escape, catch up, find shelter please!

Blue Öyster Cult was my top favourite band back in my late teenage years - when I was suffering from a bad case of schizophrenia. I was a psycho. And the music of BÖC struck a chord with me because it was so darned *weird*.

I seriously believe that the music of BÖC helped me to recover from my psychosis. Because that weird music gave me something which motivated me to focus on something *outside* of my own consciousness. Listening to the first two LPs released by BÖC was like therapy for me. For I was for the first time in quite a while focusing on something out there in reality.

So BÖC will always have a special place in my heart. It was the first rock band (besides the Beatles) which I fell in love with.
