I'd say it was pretty essential.
Do you care for it personally, Urban? Also, do you care at all for Alive? (Many tell me that is an essential album to any rock collection)

"Destroyer" is their worst album because of the over production. I do prefer the eponymous Kiss, Hotter Than Hell, Dressed to Kill. After Destroyer, they dumped Bob Ezrin and turned to Eddie Kramer and produced two more great hard rock albums Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun. Unfortunately by the time those two were released, they turned themselves into cartoon characters and live action dolls, and were pretty much dismissed. They upgraded their musicianship in the 80's, but their music wasn't as memorable. They simply didn't have Ace Frehley, on board anymore producing all those great riffs. The clip below is from the 1st album which is pretty much regarded as one of their best albums. Checkout the Sabbath influence three-quarters in with the time change.

With all the stuff you`ve been recommended surely you don`t need to be listening to Kiss! But if you must.... the ones to listen to are the Kiss debut, Destroyer, Lick it Up and Creatures of the Night. In fact I don`t normally recommend "best of albums" but I remember there is actually a good Kiss one, that focuses on the four original members of the band and dedicates one cd to each member. the material covers most of Kiss`s best stuff and some of the solo releases.

Also instead of getting Alive why don`t you just get a dvd of the band as this is really what the band is all about.

In all honesty unless you`ve loads of money, you really don`t need to be spending it on Kiss.
So I should stick to ACDC for the mindless/fun rock I need? (mindless rock is good stuff on my drive to work)

Thanks for all the rec's guys.

Nothing wrong with mindless rock like Kiss and AC/DC but don`t spend too much money on it. I normally buy my cd`s cheap either through certain shops I know which sell new cd`s only and specialized market stalls which sell them second hand and then of course there is Amazon which is normally quite cheap.

Now I`m saying this from a UK perspective, no idea how much cd`s cost you where you are.

there's a pretty good special edition of "Gold" called "Sound + Vision" - which offers quite a good retrospective of the band and a DVD of "Unmasked"

I got it pretty cheap here at about 6 bucks
