No, it's just not a conventional instrument for any rock band to have.
If they really wanted to be simple, basic and accessible for everybody then they would have just stuck to the traditional 3 or 4 piece rock ensemble... Truth is, they attempted to craft their own sound, and they succeeded. Not denoting their garage rock influences of course. EDIT: Yeah it is Viola, my bad. |

I just don`t see how the velvet underground were challenging thats all.
All the did was write songs about the polar opposite of what was being sung about at the time , thats not challenging thats just a good idea, and then get a benefactor & manager who just happens to be one of the most famous artists in the world. The music was about as basic as you can get , I`ll admit they had a good musician in the band in John Cale , but he buggered off the first chance he got.

What the hell?
I never said they were the most innovative band on the planet, but it seems like everyone is presenting them as a proto *NSYNC pop group of sorts, is this the same Velvet Underground that i'm familar with? |

All I`m doing is expanding on my original post.
Kiss - Wrote basic songs , had image created by band & manager , made lots of money. Velvet Underground - Wrote basic songs with better lyrics , image manipulated by manager , made no money
