The Rolling Stones

Any time we ever get to talk about them we're usually just defending them against Beatlemania attacks, but for what is arguably the greatest rock band ever they deserve their own thread.

Aside from the countless famous jams they have, I sometimes stumble onto some amazing stuff that is never recognized as much as it should be.

What made me create this thread in particular? "Sweet Virginia" off of Exile on Main St., which I picked up after a brief visit to one of New England's world famous burger slop-houses. Some drunks harassed me into playing the song, and I don't know how you can't love this song. It just sounds like hanging out having a good time. Sloppy, Bluessy and groove-filled, its the stones at their best, and its easy to see the human side of these guys. No introspection, so virtuosity, just a jam that will not quit.

Laces Out Dan! 04-04-2006 10:56 PM

Im somewhat with you....I think they are definetly ONE of the greatest rock bands ever...and i think at the pace the mainstream music is going now...it will be a long time until we see something this great again

TheBig3 04-04-2006 10:58 PM

Any particular parts to the stones you like, guitar line? song? amazing live show? What got you into them?

Laces Out Dan! 04-04-2006 11:00 PM

Well...I think keith richards is a fanominal rythem guitarist...he is a good guitarist all around but i really love what he writes behind the music...they're a really fun band to listen to and they come out with amazing ballads like angie ... and i have tried to find some old concert footage and hadnt really found anything mind blowing...i also didnt search very hard

TheBig3 04-04-2006 11:05 PM

Allegedly some of the stones tried another project sans keith. It lead one critic to say: "If you ever had any doubt about Keef's guitar being the signature sounds of the stones, just listen to this recording"

I laughed, I love Mick, but Keith Richards is the unquestionable ultimate rock star. Spin said that when he dies their going to line the space shuttle with his liver (or kidneys). The man is all legend.

Laces Out Dan! 04-04-2006 11:06 PM

Yeah...and he still strutts around looking like he is about 120 years old

pistola 04-05-2006 01:12 AM

hahah, hell yea. migg jaager!

WOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

explosions-in-my-pants 04-05-2006 12:28 PM

i know there one of the greatest rock bands ever.... BUT! i don't like them and never have. I am in fact one of the biggest Stone haters in the world.. I don't understand why people like them so much.. there's nothing overly great about them.. well at least in my eyes..

there songs aren't that great
mick jagger is annoying
mick jaggers voice isn't really that great
mick jagger has a annoying show now(could have just been a doc tho..not sure but either way).. and him and his daughters were singing on it and non of them could sing at all.. there were just random mouse liek sounds and random 'ooohs' and 'yeas' coming out of jaggers mouth it was so stupid.
that other guy in the band.. the drunk one.. ew i don't get it.. he also isn't that great...
there songs aren't overly great... but i can understand why people would like there songs..
there old now.. and they shoudl realize that... there still milking the cow.. only the cow has been dead for years.. they've milked bessy dry... *crise* poor cow.
this band really buggers me..

anyways i know i shall get jumped all over for this.. but hell its all just MY opinion and we all know how well my thoughts are welcomed around here.

Nahh i`ll just leave you be & assume you have no taste :p:

explosions-in-my-pants 04-05-2006 12:52 PM

dude you don't even like the stones.. haha

i have taste.. but my taste i will admit isn't liked much..

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-05-2006 01:01 PM

I don`t think your taste is that bad , granted I remember you making me listen to that godawful dragonforce song & a few suspect 80s bands , but other than that I can think of much worse things to listen to than what you do.

And why do you keep saying I don`t like the Stones :(

TheBig3 04-05-2006 01:34 PM

With all the name changes around here, I don't really know who sittingbehindyou, madeinNY, and sabrinah became, but whoever you are (its really just a conglomerate of bullet posting lounge lizards to me) I have to ask why some of those things matter at all? I mean I know that theres a large peice of the global population that dislikes things for stupid reasons, but their old? And you don't like a documentry that Jagger was focused on?

What do either of those things have to do with their music? The other things you listed were in fact subjective points that I'll entertain (though it might be nice to go into why their annoying.) but seeing as this looks like the most work you've put into a post recently, I won't ask too much.

Am I also out of line thinking that if you didn't like a band, then just don't post in that thread rather than post negitivly? Or if you're going to post negitivly, at least throw them a bone in some manner by mentioning one thing you like?

This isn't me attempting to decree rules, im literally asking how you guys feel about that.

I just don't like there sound, and i don't like the band members as people.. or as the people that are shown to the media... and in the doc he couldn't sing for ****.. it was so funny.

one thing i like about them.. they still have the guts to keep going.
I respect them only because other great bands to come after words were inspired by them, and very much influenced by them.. other then that theres nothing.

TheBig3 04-05-2006 03:18 PM

So it doesn't seem impressive to you that they turned out a pretty decent album this past year?

right-track 04-05-2006 03:26 PM

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is the quality of Jagger/Richards songwriting, especially in the early days.
It seems it's always overlooked.

crow t robot 04-05-2006 06:22 PM

The stones are my favorite band and probably always will be. It's that raw, earthy quality..everything just comes from the heart! I can't really put into words what I like about them but if I was on a desert island and could listen to only one band, it would most definitely be the rolling stones

Song writing is alright.. but still the song isn't great is there isn't a voice to back it up.. much like..

working class hero - john lennon..

that there is a great song.. the writing is amazing.. but john lennons voice just doesn't cut it for me.. he is a great singer just not in that song. and to me thats what the stones are like all of the time.

TheBig3 04-05-2006 07:52 PM

Did you miss the whole "Not compared with the beatles element of this thread." WTF do I have to do here, threaten grandmothers lives? Come on now.

bungalow 04-05-2006 10:25 PM

This is a thread about the Stones....what did you expect?
They will always and forever be compared to the Beatles. I realize that it bothers you though, when we don't comply to every rule that you lay out in your original post.

jibber 04-05-2006 11:02 PM

How Does It Feel! How Does It Feel, To Be Without A Home, Like A Complete Unkn Own, Lik,e A Rollin Stone!!!!!!!!

It bothers me when you could have done that it 6 other threads on the main page of gen forums. Though I can't say im alone, I mean anytime someone doesn't use the search button you lose your mind and become a 5 year old. So im sure you can sympathize well enough...

And seeing as you're clearly illiterate, I was asking for what people thought, and went out of my way to say I wasn't telling I was asking. Can someone translate this into pictures for our buddy Little Bill?

Also, very funny jibber, but did you hear the stones version of that song...its unlistenable because jagger doesn't hold the notes like dylan did. Oh it almost physically hurt me.

Please do.

hiu 04-06-2006 02:36 PM

I wish I got to see the Rolling Stones later this month but I didn't get in quick enough plus prior commitments. Probably the last time they will ever be here too.

TheBig3 04-06-2006 02:45 PM

And the small fact that you have to give up a first born and a vital organ to afford a ticket.

The Rolling Stones

I have been listening to music for a number of years now, way more than I would honestly like to admit.
I've listend to and like a number of different genres of music, Rock, R&B/soul/funk, and so on.
But within the last decade or so I have realized who I believe in my opinion, is the greatest rock band of all-time.
Not only just musically which I believe that the Stones music is the purest rock & roll that there is, I mean when I think of funk/blues/rock guitar Richards is the man.
I will not even comment on the other band members because you only need to honestly listen to the Rolling Stones music in order to get the point, and this post would have to become a major review to be able to state everything the Stones have accomplished within the history of rock & roll.
Mick Jagger...one of the greatest showmen of all-time, and maybe the sassiest vocalist & frontman ever.
So in conclusion, I just had to get this off my chest and let/tell the World who...exactly is the greatest rock band of All-Time, no other than...
THE ROLLING STONES!

RVCA 05-24-2010 11:35 PM

I have a tough time deciding who is better; The Beatles or Zeppelin. But I do know that I prefer both to the Rolling Stones.

The stones are just... kinda... boring. But I do like and respect them.

edit: I've been wondering, what does "account disabled" mean here? Were those people banned, or is that something they do on their own?

Blah, whatever.

Rolling Stones = Orgasm.

Pretty much my favourite artists ever. I am intrigued to what the re-released "Exile on Mainstreet" album is going to sound like as apparently Mick Jaggers voice has been digitally remastered to sound clean.

Saw them in concert a couple of years ago, absolutely brilliant show. Mick Jagger looks like a corpse but has the energy of a 12 year-old. Keith Richards got to sing a couple of songs and his voice is irresistible.

Favourite track is probably Gimmie Shelter.

Bulldog 05-25-2010 05:50 AM

They're easily among my favourite ever artists too. I actually listen to their 70s material more than the 60s stuff, but that's more because all I have of the latter are Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed and Aftermath. Those three, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, Some Girls and half of Goat's Head Soup have been convincing enough for me down the years though.

My favourite song of theirs changes from day to day, but at the minute it's probably this one;

^ One those songs that just has to played really, really loud.

Necromancer 05-25-2010 11:38 AM

Thats^some good stuff BullDog! I had to go and listen to some Stones after hearing it.
A couple of songs I have to listen to when I go through my collection is,
Gimme Shelter.
Under My Thumb.
and my favorite, Your Love Is Strong.
Richards guitar parts are just so damn good, and I love the way the Stones incorporated the harmonica into their music.

Flower Child 05-25-2010 11:45 AM

I have become addicted to their song 'Waiting on a Friend'

Usually I go for their more rough and tumble stuff but oh this song is just perfect for lounging out in the sun when you're wanting something a little softer. The lyrics are just superb. Its songs like these that just makes me wish I could marry Mick Jagger.

glastonelle 05-31-2010 04:22 PM

I was addicted to the song "Angie" for a while. Guess I still am in a way.

Flower Child 07-26-2010 05:58 PM

Happy birthday to Mick Jagger. He turned 67 today.

Doesn't look a day over 85.

almauro 07-26-2010 06:27 PM

I saw him sitting up in the VIP section at the World Cup w/ Leonardo DiCaprio...he looked good for an old wrinkly prune. Lately I've been hooked on "Time Waits for No One".

jtwilliams 07-26-2010 08:21 PM

I've been permanently hooked on "All Down The Line" & "Torn & Frayed" off Exile.

poppie 12-12-2010 06:49 PM

Rolling stones

Well what do you guys think about that stones!?
i got all thier stuff il love paint it black, under my thumb,
wild horses, gimmie shelter, mothers helper....

TheBig3 12-12-2010 06:51 PM

I love "the search function"

clutnuckle 12-12-2010 06:57 PM

My personal favorite is actually "The Newcomer Blues". My favorite line of the whole song is "New guy comes along, can't read the rules/It's gonna get locked, I pity the fool". Really d33p stuff.

TheBig3 12-12-2010 06:58 PM

I think Mick Jones is on that one. Thats the good stuff.

Necromancer 12-14-2010 03:39 PM

Under My Thumb, 1966 album Aftermath.
Your Love Is Strong, 1994 album Voodoo Lounge.
It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It) album, Its Only R&R-1974.
Call Me In Trouble, is the title of another one of my favorite singles by the Stones, don't remember which album it was on?
