Well he wasn't a songwriter, but He was a very talented instrumentalist. And I think he deserves credit for that.

Not really because it was implied that Brian was overshadowed because of his playing abilities, which simply wasn't the case. He was a much more talented musician than Keith.

I think that this is actually pretty blurred. Remember "Brown Sugar"? That was all Keith. They were both great musicians, but Brian certainly had different skills.

and Keith allegedly "stole" the riff from Rory Gallagher (he was on consideration to be the replacement for Mick Taylor)

Enjoying Sticky Fingers at the moment! Goddammit they were a great band. Just a perfect blend of rock, blues and country all to the perfect amount on this record. And Jagger's wailing vocals complement them so beautifully! Very nice indeed. :yeah:

Same. There's just so much in that album!

My favourite is "Dead Flowers", because the satire is just so exquisite, the wryness of the line "send me dead flowers to my wedding/and I won't forget to put roses on your grave" is incredible.
I think it's their best attempts to try folk rock in their entire career.
Rolling Stone magazine got it wrong as usual and said it just "didn't work".

Also very good is "Sister Morphine", which captures the confusion so clearly, and the guitar and piano distortions are fantastic.

Probably my favourite album they've done.

It isn't fun when a band is trying so hard to be a different one.

Who wants to hear a band which is in actual fact a shittier version of your favourite one?

Not me.

Actually, that's not really true and a slightly mean, but you understand.

The Flying Burrito Bros. aren't a crappier version of the Stones - they're something like a bridge between the Byrds and the Eagles - early country-rock

their cover of "Wild Horses" came out first, due to Gram Parsons' associations with Keef

I didn't know that. So there must have been a few people who didn't know who really wrote that song?

a lot of people that time dunno who the Flying Burrito Bros. were, but they were pretty seminal

it was credited to Keef and Mick on the album

I think I might have a look at these guys. They knew keef and were country rock: so I imagine a lot of their stuff will sound a bit like "Dead Flowers".

a lot of their stuff sound like a less accessible, "harder" Eagles

i personally don't like their first 2 albums (with Gram) and i haven't heard the stuff after that

give me the Desert Rose Band for that sorta stuff

(or even the Eagles, I don't care)

It only came out first because the Stones couldn't release anything because of legal wranglings with their old record company.

Anyone one that thinks differently, couldn't be a true..down to earth Rock Fan. The guys funky as hell on guitar. (Core) R&B Blues/Rock.

I have tried and tried and tried and tried to really enjoy The Rolling Stones, but somehow I can't on a great level. I enjoy them, don't get me wrong. And I appreciate their legacy extremely, but they just don't do it for me apart from about 10 songs, which isn't that many considering their body of work.

Hey, we can't force you to like them!
If you don't enjoy them, that's just your taste. If we all liked the same things then this forum would be very boring.

I for instance, can't stand that song which goes "Well it is merry Christmas/everybody's having fun", and hate every second of it. But most people like it for some reason, and they don't mind if I don't!

I heard that Keith and Gram Parsons wrote the melody to "Wild Horses". Keith is good at the guitar, but I never really thought he was all that great.

It's still a beautiful song.

And Rolling Stone put him as number 10 in their "best ever Guitarists" list that angered me so much.

I wasn't trying to take anything away from the song. I was just making a statement. I love the song.

I certainly don't think he's worthy of being in the top 10.

Well, they want to tell people what they want to hear!

I've got no doubt that Lemon Jefferson belonged above him, but that wouldn't have sold as many!

Necromancer 12-19-2011 07:36 AM

I personally think Richards deserves to be in the top ten. Hes not really known as a modern day "shredder" on guitar. But the Stones music is composed mostly with two separate/different guitar parts. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. Rhythm guitar is a better description of his style, than suggesting and ranking him with (technical) lead guitarist.

Pete Townsend is similar in style (Rhythm), genre, and era. And one hell of a songwriter.

Don't forget the earlier days with Brian Jones. Richards maintains that what he calls "guitar weaving" emerged from this period, from listening to Jimmy Reed albums: "We listened to the teamwork, trying to work out what was going on in those records; how you could play together with two guitars and make it sound like four or five".

I think someone like Robby Krieger or Robbie Robertson deserve to be higher than Richards.

And what about Gary Moore? He had enough heartache in his life without this conspicuous and spiteful snub. And I don't think Richie Sambora even made the list, which is outrageous.

The Rolling Stones is one of the best I've ever heard and honestly I'd choose the Stones over the Beatles any day. I love Gimme Shelter when Merry Clayton goes really high at 3:00 and you can hear Mick in the background. It always seems like they only need to go in and record it once and it's done perfectly.
Beast of Burden is always a good tune too.

ElvisThunders 02-19-2012 11:13 PM

I think the Stones' Rip This Joint is the greatest rock-n-roll song of all time.

This song features absolutely blazing piano along with fantastic horns and a primitive rock-n-roll rhythm that makes you wanna get up and dance. The lyrics are a joyous celebration of being a rock-n-roll band criss crossing America.

The sound is straight up rock-n-roll with no need for a sub-category. It's not punk or heavy metal or pre or post anything. I favor the 1950s over all other decades of rock-n-roll but this track from 1972 (I think) stands out as the masterpiece of the genre.

William Zanzinger 03-04-2012 07:28 PM

Love the Stones.
For some strange reason I love The Beatles too.
Keef is da man, though- "Exile" is pure magic.

Ditto. I never got into the Beatles, they were too...I don't know, pop music-like. Gimme Shelter is one of my favourite tracks solely because of the introduction. Throw in some Angie, Ruby Tuesday, Wild Horses, Paint It Black, You Can't Always Get What You Want and I'm eargasming.

Howard the Duck 03-12-2012 06:21 AM

i'd take the Stones over the Beatless anyday

OT: I wrote a "+". Recently, after asking some questions to Blast, I was accused of harassment. Do I need to post a video here to show people I don't walk around all day ready to explode? How wasn't I calm?

I was meaning it in a light-hearted way, I was pretty sure you wouldn't get it but it was worth a shot. Sometimes you need to let things go though Big3, particularly if an off-topic was well meaning.
