Fine, you're being a bit stubborn and insisting (and perhaps lazy). And it really doesn't bother me if you don't believe me. But fine, I'll look it up. I hate looking up rip offs, because you also get the batch of supposed rip offs which involve people hating a band, and trying to find a similar chord progression in two songs (which isn't a rip off, just coincidental). I'll get back to you on it soon.

Sorry for double posting... the last post is out of space
Websites/Articles:
http://www.answers.com/topic/willie-dixon (Ctrl F lawsuit) - this alone is solid evidence http://www.furious.com/perfect/jimmypage.html http://iorr.org/talk/read.php?1,222333,page=1 Random Google Quotes: Just bought FHM magazine and they had an article on The definitive guide to rock and there's a section in which they entitle "when your big chance arrives don't blow it". Well in that section they talk of a man by the name of Bobby Parker who in 1961 wrote and recorded "Watch your Step". in which Led Zeppelin stole the guitar riff outright for the instrumental"Moby ••••". Mr. Parker is quoted as sayng that Jimmy Page admitted to him , "that riff opened up alot of avenues"....... sounds to me the one accusing is the one stealing. You should get MOJO:The Roots of Led Zeppelin to find out for yourself. BIGLY, White Summer, and The Lemon Song are the only three that were almost direct "rip offs" it's boring how JP & Led Zep always get the blame, they're not the only ones! Small Faces ripped off You Need Love by Muddy Waters/Willie Dixon years earlier, but with much less imagination (or groove) than Led Zep. I love Small Faces, BTW. The post I did (Page redux) re LZ mentioned the OBVIOUS steals - I would add Jake Holemes' 'I'm Confused' - R & R is more of an influenced by KAK than a steal...but Page did steal quite a bit. And I like LZ. The whole first part of Stairway to Heaven is ripped off from Spirit's song 'Taurus'. The intro to Stairway comes from one of blind harpist Turloch O'Carrolin's (don't know if I spelled that right) tunes. The rest came from the Spirit song. I always thought the guitar solo part sounded like it was inspired by Jimi's version of All Along the Watchtower. ************************* Anyway, that all came from a quick google search. If you want even more solid evidence, well, you can look. I am quite skeptical with rip offs (as they are often just songs with similar chord sequences used to form conspiracies). I have never bothered looking much, since I really don't care enough for Zeppelin to research every intricate detail about them. I really don't have the time or resources to write an academic paper on Jimmy Page ripping off music. One other thing too, using a bow on a guitar wasn't Page's idea. I thought you would have known about Page's ripping off. It's quite a popular topic in other forums. I have a link to a whole thread about it if you want? So are you happy now Misfitspunk?

Page wrote loads of other good stuff anyway. I still prefer Hendrix though.

zeppelin did get a lot of ideas for their songs from earlier songs, but they would always change them up and make them better and in their own style. dazed and confused owes a lot of thanks to jake holmes, he founded the evil sounding descending line, but page added his own spin to it. he layered it with fuzzed out octaves and weeping bends and vibrato, later displacing the entire figure by a dotted-eighth beat. also it features a heavy 6/8 call and response riff not found in the holmes original. this is true to most of the songs they supposedlty ripped off. they would use parts of songs to get an idea, but they wouldnt play the whole thing note for note in that same style. if you think about it, how many songs have used a descending line like dazed and confused? tales of brave ulysses has a descending line, i know there are some others as well i cant think of off hand. and they did not rip off stairway to heaven or parts of it at all, it was purely original zeppelin.

And being a Spirit fan myself, i can tell you firsthand that STH dosent sound remotely like Taurus, save the first few notes, and not even those notes are the same, they sound a little similar, big deal, many blues guitarists use traditional licks all the time, its nothing new.... The fact is, they are NOT the same notes...Listen to Taurus because im pretty damn sure you havent actualy heard it, the notes that Page suposedly ripped off are several octaves below STHs opening notes and not to mention that STH has completely different key progressions, its not even the same ****ing chords, the notes sound similar and thats undeniable proof of ripping them off?...That reminds me of all the people who cant seem to make up their mind which song Kurt Cobain ripped off for Smells Like Teen Spirit...Page did originaly ask the band if he could use Taurus as the inspiration for his opening riff, thats all, he didnt rip it off, because it was not the same riff. He very rarely has copied songs note for note, when he did rip something off, he would still alter it, changing many of the notes and doing a lot of improv based from the remaining notes, and the end result would be somthing that sounds only remotely similar to the original. It isnt a rare practice at all, Blues guitarists do it all the time. |
