I have nothing against complex music in complex sigs, or chops, or anything like that.
But feel and musicality I put at a premium. Look at Zappa's drummers (Colaiuta, Bozzio, Wackerman, Dunbar to name some), or take a guy like Billy Cobbham -- they got sick chops but also serious feel and musicality.
Now Moon might have been sloppy at times but not really, not to me - what I hear is serious chops and some serious feel, if a bit wild and on the edge of out-of-control.
A lot LOOSER feel than keeping every stroke open-roll style all the time. Close it up sometimes. Philly Joe Jones it some of the time.
I'm rambling and making a couple different points here but my inital response didn't offer much so I wanted to give a real one.
Don't get me wrong I admire Peart for how well he does what he does but that's just not my favorite style.
